Mda Demand By Tlc Gets Slight Upset For The Fastest Time To The $109,956 Mardi Gras Derby
BOSSIER CITY, LA–MARCH 5, 2025–The top two fastest times came from trial two of four in a photo finish on Wednesday afternoon as 32 sophomores vied for a spot in the $109,956 Mardi Gras Derby at Louisiana Downs.
Mda Demand By Tlc, ridden by Rolando Cabrera, led the second trial from gate-to-wire in 19.794 seconds, earning him the fastest qualifying time. Favored to win Gold Gun Z, piloted by Bryan Candanosa, was on Mda Demand By Tlc's tail right out of the gate but was outdueled by a nose, stopping the clock at 19.801. The two times resulted in a 101 speed index.
Mda Demand By Tlc's slight upset, paid $9.20 to win on 3-1 odds. Gold Gun Z's second-place finish paid $2.80 for place as the favorite.
Trainer Guillermo Martinez saddled Mda Demand By Tlc for owner M and M Stables LLC. The $4,200 winner's share of the 400-yard victory boosted the son of The Louisiana Cartel's earnings to $27,640. He has lit the board in six of seven starts with three wins and a fourth-place finish in last year's LQHBA Louisiana Million Invitational Stakes.
Manuel Alvarez of M and M Stables LLC bred Mda Demand By Tlc in Louisiana out of the Mr Eye Opener mare Bac By Demand.
Second fastest qualifier Gold Gun Z was the easy favorite due to his Laddie Futurity-G2 win and fourth place finish in last year's LQHBA Louisiana Million Futurity-G1. The son of Gold Heart Eagle V has a 3-2-1 record from seven starts with $212,866 in the bank.
Trainer Jose Espinosa conditions Gold Gun Z for Party Tyme Racing. Slash Z Quarter Horses bred the $122,000 LQHBA Yearling Sales graduate in Louisiana out of Cf Smokin Gun by Tres Seis.
