Maka Roon Gets First Career Stakes Victory In New Mexico Classic Distaff Stakes
HOBBS, NM–DECEMBER 15, 2024–Maka Roon, a 4-year-old daughter of leading sire Eye Am King, got her first career stakes victory on Sunday when she won the $100,000 New Mexico Classic Distaff Stakes at Zia Park.
Ridden by jockey Jacob Enriquez, Maka Roon led early to win by a half, stopping the timer in 17.198 seconds, a 101-speed index into a 10 mph head wins for 350 yards.
Trainer Julian Rey Honesto saddled the gray filly to her fifth career win in 18 starts for owner Christian Dominguez-Olivas. Dirk Jones bred the filly from C Roon by Brookstone Bay.
The Distaff winner's purse, valued at $58,200, boosted Maka Roon's earnings total to $168,335. Maka Roon entered the race off a third-place finish in the Champagne Lane Stakes at Albuquerque in her last start on October 27.
Stakes winner First Flashin gained late under jockey Raul Ortega to pick up $19,400 for finishing second. Carlos Acosta, Jr. trains the 7-year-old daughter of champion First Moonflash for owner Victor Marroguin. Mike Abraham bred the $204,839 earner from the Jumpn mare Stevie Six.
Big Daddys Dream stepped up from a second-place effort in a $15,000 claiming race December 1 to finish half-a-length back. The daughter of multiple stake sire Big Daddy Cartel picked up her first black type and earned $9,700 for the effort. Trainer Candelario Villamar named jockey Jacquelyn Bobroff to ride the 6-year-old mare for owner Benjamin Calderon. Richard and Patricia Shearer bred the $117,091 earner from the Calligrapher mare Call My Dream.
Over Da Edge, Big Daddy Farr, Good Things Come, Woodys Storm, Manysadesofgray, and Get Down Dragon completed the field. Ez On My Mind was scratched.
