Major Longshot Quick As Jess Wins The Upset In The $53,000 Elko Intermountain Futurity
ELKO, NV–SEPTEMBER 2, 2024–11-1 longshot Quick As Jess pulls off the upset by a neck in the $53,000 Elko Intermountain Futurity at Elko County Fair on Monday.
Nakia Teeter qualified Quick As Jess with the ninth fastest time in the finals, but Luis Cortez took the mount in the finals. The son of One Sweet Jess broke his maiden in 17.755 seconds, clocking a 98-speed index while leading wire-to-wire against a 12 mph headwind. The 350-yard victory paid $25.60 to win.
Trained by Chris Mitchell, Quick As Jess has a record of 1-2-2 from seven starts, and the $21,200 payday boosted his earnings to $27,889. He was a finalist in last year's Beehive Futurity Stakes at Weber Downs.
Watterson Brothers Family Partners bred and own Quick As Jess in Utah out of the Famous Lane mare Wb Quick Silver.
Raphael Ramiro piloted Cosmic Marfa to second place. Owned and trained by Abel Romero, the winning son of The Marfa Lights has earned $13,308. Michael and Beth Harper bred the bay gelding out of Halley by Apollitical Jess in Oklahoma.
The fastest qualifier from the trials, El Treen, ridden by Jose Figueroa, placed third. Trainer Farrol Cunningham saddled the son of Freighttrain B for owner-breeder Adrian Aleman of Utah. The brown colt out of After Party by One Famous Eagle has a record of 1-2-2 from seven starts with nearly $10,000 in the bank.
Paint The City, Genetically Famous, Be Capricho, Eye Am Unique, Hunny Moon, Hidden Version, and Shes A Fireball round out the order of finish.
Elko Intermountain Futurity Consolation
Jockey Oscar Villa led Aint Shee Something from wire-to-wire to win the Elko County Fair Futurity Consolation by a length over post-time Favorite La Iguana. The daughter of Carters Cartel posted a 91 speed index in 18.004 seconds.
Trainer Martin Vega saddled Aint Shee Something for owner-breeder Pedro Vega of Idaho. The bay filly out of Lynda Dasher by Igotyourtac finally broke her maiden from six starts and improved her earnings to $4,661 for the win.
La Iguana, Idaho Jess, Yukos Mountain Docs Racin Grace, Triggerr and Paint Big Dreams complete the order of finish.
