Machiavelli Gets Stakes Victory In $202,500 Sires' Cup Futurity In Retama Park Closer

SELMA, TX–AUGUST 17, 2024—The final race of the Retama Park 2024 Quarter Horse meet went to Machiavelli. The son of champion sire Tempting Dash raced to a three-quarter length victory in the $205,000 TQHA Sires' Cup Futurity final on Saturday after posting the fastest qualifying time in the August 2 trials.

Jockey Nestor Duran got his fourth win, third stakes, on the program when he booted Machiavelli home in 17.909 seconds, equaling an 89-speed index into an 8 mph headwind.

Leading trainer Juan Diaz, Jr., saddled the $51,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate to his third in five starts for owner CH Horse Racing, LLC. Bred in California by Alipio Brugos, from the Apollitical Jess mare Chalala Jess, Machiavelli earned $82,000 for the effort to more than double his earnings total to $159,521. He was third in the Sam Houston Futurity(G2) in June.

Stablemate Reletless Politics dueled early under jockey Victor Urieta, Jr. to earn $41,000 for second. Diaz conditions the son of first-crop sire Chilitos for owners Javier Garza and Marco Ramirez. Cuatro Garzas Farm bred the gelding in Texas from the Hes Relentless mare Relentless Lil Lady. Winner of the Firecracker Futurity(G2) two races back, he has earned $204,560.

Who Wants Too Fancy finished head back to earn $20,500 for third. Gilberto Gonzalez trains the $15,000 TQHA Yearling Sale repurchase for owner-breeder Guerras Racing Stables. Winless after four starts, the Mr Fancy B gelding out of Who Wants To Be With You by Coronas Leaving You had earned $25,415.

Cartel Moons, Tempting Grace, Poww Poww, Rios Dashing Spirit, Twinkly, A Fabulous Fling, and Chiles completed the field.
