LQHBA Yearling Sale Graduates Dominate Day 1 of $384,440 Mardi Gras Futurity(RG2) Trials at LAD
BOSSIER CITY, LA–MARCH 8, 2025–Led by Mamma Im Leaving You, all five spots in the first of two days of trials for the restricted Grade 2 $399,104Mardi Gras Futurity were earned by graduates of the LQHBA Yearling Sale at Louisiana Downs today.
Those five fastest qualifiers will join the five fastest from seven additional trials on Sunday to return to Louisiana Downs on Saturday, March 29, and vie for a winner's purse valued at $179,596. All trials were contested at 300 yards.
Mamma Im Leaving You drifted out in her first career start under leading jockey Bryan Candanosa as she defeated fellow qualifier Last Eagle V by half-a-length in the fifth of seven trials. The daughter of multiple stakes sire Coronas Leaving You posted the top qualifying time of 15.511 seconds, a 98-speed index to a 12 mph headwind.
Trainer Jose Espinosa conditions the $33,000 LQHBA Sale graduate for owner Jeantile M. Deville. Wiggins Acres, LLC bred Mamma Im Leaving You from the Apollitical Jess mare Mamma Jamma Jamma, the dam of Grade 1 Lee Berwick Futurity finalist Jess Train B. This is the family of champion Apollitical Gold.
Espinosa got his second qualifier with Ten Plus, a $30,000 LQHBA graduate, who won the opening trial by 1-1/2 lengths. Piloted by jockey Arturo Alvarez, the son of second-crop sire Gold Heart Eagle V clocked 15.512 seconds, a 96-speed index into a 12 mph headwind.
Espinosa co-owns the colt out of the champion mare Volcom Bay, by Volcom, with Robert Witsiepe. Bennie and Terri Jeter bred the half-sibling to stakes-placed New Blend.
Bumped at the start under jockey Yaidel Rodriguez, runner-up to fastest qualifier Mamma Im Leaving You, Last Eagle V held on to the third-fastest clocking of 15.601 seconds, a 93-speed index.
Trainer Eduardo Morales conditions the son of Gold Heart Eagle V for owner Leobersi Perez. Brian Gunder bred the $16,000 LQHBA Sale graduate from the First Down Dash mare Ifuaintfirstulast, a half-sister to stakes winners Mon Ti Rose and Mon Ti Stoli.
Under jockey Arturo Alvarez, One Dashing Mind drew clear in the third trial to win by 1-1/4 lengths while posting the fourth fastest time of 15.711, a 90-speed index into a 12 mph headwind.
Trainer Guadalupe Tristan saddled the $35,000 LQHBA graduate for owners Barraza Brothers and Sons Racing LLC. Thomas Glenn Fontenot bred the One Dashing Eagle colt from the Mr Eye Opener mare Doievercrossyourmind. One Dashing Mind is a half-brother to stakes winner Dashacrossyourmind. This is the family of champion Mongoose Jet Eye.
Rf Fast Dash N Blood finished second to the aforementioned Ten Plus in the opening trial to get the final qualifying spot on day 1. Under jockey Victor Urieta, Jr., the $80,000 LQHBA Sale graduate finished 1-1/2 lengths ahead of the field to clock 15.752 seconds, an 88-speed index.
Miguel A. Castillo trains the Apollitical Blood gelding for owner Jaime Cardenas. Tim and Jennie Rogers' Rogers Farm bred the bay from the Heza Fast Dash mare Fast Dash N Deb. Rf Fast Dash N Blood is a half-brother to stakes winner Rf Fast Dash N Train, Rf Fast Dash N Jess, and McM Fast Dashin Blue.
