Last Year's SD Bred Futurity Runner Up Bhr Flashing Nickers Wins This Year's SD Bred Derby
FORT PIERRE–OCTOBER 6, 2024–Trainer Robert Don Johnson's horses dominated the $15,000 South Dakota Bred Derby on Sunday at Fort Pierre, scoring the top three positions. Bhr Flashing Nickers took home the trophy for first after winning in a photo finish over post-time favorite That Reckless Pete.
Bhr Flashing Nickers placed second to That Reckless Pete in last year's South Dakota Bred Futurity, so tonight's victory was redemption.
Jockey Luis Maldonado got the leg up on Bhr Flashing Nicker for a gate-to-wire win by a nose. The black filly clocked a 93-speed index in 13.484 seconds with a nine mph crosswind. The 250-yard dash paid $5.40 to win.
That Reckless Pete, ridden by Uriel Cervantes, placed second 3/4-length ahead of Bhr So Long Charlie and Alexis Ramirez. Hasta Be Ivory, piloted by Zack Ziegler, closed out the order of finish in fourth.
The $7,500 Derby payday improved Bhr Flashing Nickers' earnings to $35,806. She has lit the board ten of 15 starts with three wins. She also placed third in last year's BHS Futurity and Valley Junction Juvenile Stakes.
Johnson trains Bhr Flashing Nicker and third-place finisher Bhr So Long Charlie for owners-breeders Broken Heart Ranch. They are both sired by One Mean Eagle. Bhr Flashing Nickers' dam is the Cs Flashlight mare Bhr Guys Flash Me. Bhr So Long Charlie's is out of Bhr Missy Special by Shake It Special, and he has a record of 0-3-3 from ten starts with $10,863 in earnings.
Runner-up That Reckless Pete has five wins and $35,350 in earnings for owner-breeder Valerie Shoun. The son of Tf Im That Guy is out of Jess Dizzy Lizzy by Jess Eye.
Trainer Kent Cross owns fourth-place finisher Hast Be Ivory. The daughter of Hasta Be Fast has two wins from 13 starts with $26,562 in the bank. She was bred by John G. Johnson out of the Ivory James mare Tickle The Ivorys.
