La Punsada Scores Second Consecutive Win In The Malad Maiden Frolic
MALAD, ID–AUGUST 10, 2024–La Punsada gets her second consecutive win for the upset in the $5,800 Malad Maiden Frolic (not black type) at Oneida County Fair on Saturday.
La Punsada had not won a race in 20 career starts, but with jockey Pedro Rueda in the pilot seat, the four-year-old filly achieved her second career victory within a week of her first.
The daughter of A Regal Burst broke her maiden at Oneida on August 4, and returned six days later for a 3/4-length victory in :15.386 seconds. She clocked a 101 speed index running against a 15 mph crosswind, and the 300-yard upset paid $16.00 to win on 5-1 odds.
The $3,480 payday boosted La Punsada's earnings to $18,530 for owner-trainer Jesus Nolazco. Jesus Velazquez bred the bay filly out of Rare Dixie Dash by The Black Perry in Utah.
Post-time favorite Desirio Ta Mooneagle, ridden by Joel Cruz, dueled in a late effort at the wire for second, a neck ahead of Te Runnin Royal Kid and jockey Jesus Flores.
Trainer Alvin Torres saddled Desirio Ta Mooneagle for owner-breeder Darian Burt of Utah. The winning daughter of Moonin The Eagle has earned $4,360. She is out of Dash Ta Desirio by Desirio.
Trained by Javier Duarte, Te Runnin Royal Kid just came off his first victory in the Speed Index Final at Pocatello Downs two weeks ago and has $11,927 in the bank. The four-year-old son of Ya Runnin Scared was bred in North Dakota by T E Goldsbey. Guillermo Duarte owns the sorrel colt out of Special Dash Chick by Its Royal Time.
Capos Lady Villa, Racy Angel Chick and Sugar Time Jess round out the order of finish. Sgl Prim Time and Sua Sponte Dasher were scratched.
