Junk Drawer Gets Up There For The Short Distance Victory In The Grande Prairie Sprint Stakes
GRANDE PRAIRIE, ALB–AUGUST 11–Junk Drawer gets up in time to win the $15,402 (US) Grande Prairie Sprint Stakes by a neck over favorites Double Cruise and Jessaprimadonna for a slight upset on Sunday at Evergreen Park.
Ricardo Moreno piloted Junk Drawer for the short 110-yard distance to victory in :7.468 seconds. The first-place finish paid $9.70 to win on 7-2 odds.
Daniel Garcia was aboard Double Cruise for his second-place finish over post-time favorite Jessaprimadonna and Daniel Tavares, who came in third. Alfonso, ridden by Jose Rocha, was fourth, and Shamoura, with Blandford Stewart in the irons, completed the field in fifth.
Junk Drawer earned $8,163 for the win, boosting his earnings to $35,662 and improving his race record to $35,662. The four-year-old Alberta-bred won the Maiden Express Stakes at Century Miles and placed third in the Alberta Bred Derby at Century Downs in 2023. He has won two of three starts in 2024 for owner-trainer Laurie Ferguson.
Ralph Danard bred Junk Drawer out of the Favorite Cartel mare, Concealed Attraction. He is sired by Obsessed With Corona.
Tom Kenway bred, owns and trains Double Cruise. The seven-year-old Alberta homebred sired by BD Cruiser has lit the board 26 of 31 starts with 11 wins and $123,140 in the bank. The eight-time stakes winner is out of Eye Cruise by Eye Take Time.
Trainer Misael Moreno saddled 11-time winner Jessaprimadonna for owner Cindy Fehr. The six-year-old daughter of One Sweet Jess was bred in Louisiana by Leroy Janacek Jr out of the Favorite Cartel mare Favorite Primadonna. She has earned $112,228 with five stakes titles, including the CTM Princess Stakes and Old Timers Classic Stakes this year.
