Hot Chilly Sets the Pace in Wyoming Bred Derby Trials at Energy Downs

GILLETTE, WY—May 24, 2025—Hot Chilly sizzled in the fifth of six trials Saturday at Energy Downs, posting the fastest qualifying time for the $75,000-added Wyoming Bred QH Derby with a sharp clocking of :17.651 seconds at 350 yards.
The final for accredited Wyoming-bred 3-year-olds is slated for June 7, 2025.
Owned and bred by William C. Fox, the filly by second-crop sire Chilitos, out of Jeans Lee (by Mr Jesse Lee), was making just her fifth career start and delivered her most polished performance to date.
Trained by Tyler Gibbs and piloted by Keivan Serrano, Hot Chilly edged out Kcross Comin In Hot by a neck in their heat to top all qualifiers on the day.
Jess A Dash Of Class, another talented filly, posted the second-fastest time of :17.667 in a convincing trial score under Jesus Valenzuela.
Trained by Kylie Valenzuela, the Jess Paint Me—Steffiesclassic Dash (by Winners Version) daughter is owned by Eddie Jensen and was bred by Ron & Laurie Moosman (WY). She captured her trial by a measured margin while never seriously threatened.
Rounding out the top three was Kcross Comin In Hot, who narrowly missed out on a trial win against fastest qualifier Hot Chilly but still clocked a strong :17.686 for owner BDS Performance Horses.
Trained by Skyler Greene and ridden by Victor Felipe Dominguez, the Rgr Jungle Jock gelding out of Caseys Six Pick (by My Special Bear) was bred in Wyoming by Wagonhammer Ranch.

The field includes a mix of promising fillies and colts, with several from the barns of Kylie Valenzuela and Robby Overturf.
The Wyoming Bred Derby final promises to showcase some of the state’s best sophomore Quarter Horses, with a significant purse and regional bragging rights on the line.
