SHAKOPEE, MN—AUGUST 15, 2024—Relentless Rocket, under jockey Ramiro Garcia, rocketed to a 1-1/2 length win in the $80,400 Northlands Futurity Thursday night at Canterbury Park.

"Before the race, we were a little worried. He's a good-minded horse, but he kind of wants to pull on the rig," Garcia said following the race. "I think the distance helps him, and his mind is calming down a lot. He didn't pull on the rig today. He just settled down and took off."

Conditioned by leading trainer Jason Olmstead, Relentless Rocket is a homebred son of leading sire Hes Relentless, owned by Tom Maher. Tom and his brother Bill bred the bay gelding in South Dakota from the Corona Cartel mare Mia Corona.

The trio of Maher, Olmstead, and Garcia swept the Thursday night stakes schedule by also winning the Canterbury Park Derby in the previous race (see related story).

Relentless Rocket raced to his third consecutive win while completing the 350 yards in 17.848 seconds, equaling a 90-speed index into a 7mph headwind. The $33,768 futurity winner's purse boosted the 2-year-old's earnings total to $49,628.

Southern Eagle, who finished second, was disqualified for interference and placed fifth.

Curlie D, a daughter of leading first-crop sire Uncle D, received $13,668 after being moved to second. Also from the Olmstead barn, Curlie D races for owner-breeder Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC. Raul Ramirez, Jr. had the riding call on the brown filly out of Veuve Clicquot by Pyc Paint Your Wagon. Curlie D doubled her earnings to $27,481.

Swimsuit Model, a daughter of third-crop sire Kvn Corona racing for owner William J. Maher, earned $8,040 for third. Tyler Stein named jockey Angel Ramirez to ride the Utah-bred filly from the First Down Dash mare Aquafina. McColee Land & Livestock LLC bred the $20,029 earner.

Completing the official order of finish was Da Lie Lah, Southern Eagle; I Told U Twice-DH, Alcala Corona-DH, My Heart My Dynasty, Relentless Mogul, and L Conejo.
