Flying Joy 1 Springs 33-1 Upset in $694,186 All American Oaks

Flying Joy 1 entered Sunday’s Grade 1, $694,186 All American Oaks as the 10th-fastest qualifier, but the longshot saved her best performance for the final, scoring a 33-1 upset at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Ridden by Ricky Ramirez for trainer S. Wood, Flying Joy 1 broke sharply from post four and immediately put herself at the front of the 440-yard championship event. The sorrel filly inched away before holding off Lookatme Z to win by 3/4 length in :20.930.

Owned by David Rogers, Flying Joy 1 was bred by Cuadra JM LLC and is a $49,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate. The daughter of Flying Cowboy 123 is out of the First Moonflash mare Kylee Joy, and her female family includes champion and All American Derby (G1) winner The Casanova ($259,102).

The victory marked the second graded stakes win of Flying Joy 1’s career after capturing the Oklahoma Futurity (G2) last season. She was also a finalist in the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity (RG1) as a 2-year-old.

Flying Joy 1 improved her record to 11-4-3-0, and the $291,558 winner’s share pushed her career earnings to $525,212.

Lookatme Z crossed the wire in second under Francisco Calderon for owner Triple One Ranch LLC and trainer Samuel Mendoza. The eighth-fastest qualifier chased Flying Joy 1 but could not reel in the eventual winner, finishing 3/4 length back.

Bred by Tommy Dinwiddie, Lookatme Z is a $350,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate. The daughter of Apollitical Jess is out of the winning FDD Dynasty mare Shezgothelook, a full sister to two-time World Champion Danjer ($2,499,432). Lookatme Z now has a record of 10-2-4-2 with earnings of $160,608. She finished second in the EVD Juvenile Stakes last season.

Sixth-fastest qualifier Wera C finished third under Jesus Ayala for owner Ruse Ranch LLC and trainer Marco Chavez-Gutierrez. The filly encountered trouble at the start before recovering to finish one length behind the winner.

Bred by Ellis H. “Hank” Bird, Wera C is a $73,000 TQHA Yearling Sale graduate. She is by Flying Cowboy 123 and out of the One Dashing Eagle mare Pillow Talk. Her female family includes champion Dos Poruno.

Fastest qualifier and 3-5 favorite Full Moon Desire finished fourth. The daughter of Chilitos entered the final following a one-length trial victory and brought graded stakes credentials that included wins in last year’s EVD Futurity (G2) and Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge Stakes (G3).

Beautiful Temptation, Ruse Ticle Knockout, Remarkable Cowgirl, Sparks Fly Hr and Dakota Stone completed the order of finish. Apollirevenge was scratched.
