Fired Outfinished Miss Fancy Nancy In The All Canadian Derby
EDMONTON, ALB–JULY 27, 2024–Fired defeated Miss Fancy Nancy, the fastest qualifier from the trials, in a tight photo finish at the wire in the $16,928 (US) All Canadian Derby at Century Mile on Saturday.
Ricardo Moreno got the leg up aboard Fired for the 350-yard Derby. The son of Fly Thru The Fire clocked a 98 speed index in :17.864 seconds, 4/10th of a second off her own track record set in May while breaking her maiden. The post-time favorite's victory paid $4.20 to win on 1-1 odds.
Miss Fancy Nancy, piloted by Jesus Ambrocio Medina, stumbled at the gates but picked up her speed for second, a length ahead of O Lets Be First and rider Daniel Garcia who got show.
Fired broke his maiden this year while clocking the fastest qualifying time to the Maiden Express Stakes, where he set the new track record and returned to the finals for another victory. He then placed second in the Century Mile Derby Challenge finals and the All Canadian Derby trials.
After today's $8,750 victory, Fired has three career wins and $45,820 in the bank. The California-bred gelding also placed third in the Canada Cup Futurity [G3] and fourth in the Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge last year.
William Leech saddled Fired for owner Jerry Stojan, who purchased him for $18,000 from breeder Steve D. Burns in the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. He is out of Ruths Chris by Separatist.
Misael Moreno trained runner-up Miss Fancy Nancy for owners-breeders Barry and Janice Sather. The three-time winning daughter of Big Lew has earned $46,911. She is from the Favorite Cartel mare Singles Cruise.
Breeders Wesley and Susen Oultan sold third-place finisher O Lets Be First to his owner Jeffrey Rath in the 2022 AQHRA Yearling Mixed Sale for $13,000. The son of champion sire First Timber has three career wins and $43,498 in earnings. The Alberta-bred gelding is out of Lets Get Going by Separatist.
Hez Hott Ur Nott, Ms Mini Warrior, Get It Good, Northford Three Ten, High Rocky Mountain, and Rocn N Space complete the order of finish.
