El Treen Breaks Maiden, Sets Fastest Mark In Intermountain QH Futurity Trials
ELKO, NV–AUGUST 23, 2024–El Treen got his first career win today, posting the fastest time from four trials contested at the Elko County Fairground for the Intermountain QH Futurity.
The ten fastest qualifiers will return on Monday, September 2, to vie for the winner's share of a $35,000-est. purse going a distance of 350 yards.
Under jockey Jose Figueroa, El Treen broke best in the final trial and completed the task in 17.781 seconds, a 97-speed index with a 12 mph tailwind, to establish the fastest qualifying time.
Trainer Farrol Cunningham saddled the Freighttrain B colt to his first career win for owner-breeder Adrian Aleman. A finalist in the Pocatello Downs Spring Classic Futurity in May, El Treen has compiled a 1-2-1 record in six starts.
Final trial runner-up Cosmic Marfa held on for the second fastest time of 17.839 seconds, a 95-speed index. Owner-trainer Abel Romero named jockey Raphael Romero to ride the 2-year-old son of third-crop sire The Marfa Lights.
Michael and Beth Harper bred the $6,500 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate in Oklahoma from the Apollitical Jess mare Halley. In June, cosmic Marfa was a finalist in the Roche Equine Veterinary Services Futurity.
