Ding Dang Dulce Surges Late To Win Canterbury Park Derby

Ding Dang Dulce overcame a troubled start and surged late to capture the $36,675 Canterbury Park Derby at Canterbury Park on Thursday evening.

Ridden by Fernando Fonseca-Soto, Ding Dang Dulce stumbled leaving the gate and raced near the back of the field early. The gelding began making up ground before producing a strong late surge to get up by a nose over Terrorizer. He completed the 400 yards in :20.063 for a 97 speed index.

Ding Dang Dulce is owned and trained by Haley Hobbs. Bred by Neff Hogue Farm LLC, he is a $10,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate. The gelding is sired by Dulce Sin Tacha and out of the winning Valiant Hero mare Valiant Strawfly. His female family includes three-time champion Ab What A Runner ($1,342,389).

Winning his second consecutive start, Ding Dang Dulce improved his record to 14-7-2-1 with earnings of $109,796. Earlier this season, he was a finalist in the Grade 3 Mr Master Bug Stakes. Last year, he won the Northlands Futurity, finished second in the Grade 3 Laico Bird Stakes and third in the Grade 3 Easy Jet Stakes.

Terrorizer narrowly missed the victory under Ryder Olmstead. The gelding moved into contention and took the lead late before being caught at the wire, finishing a nose behind the winner in :20.071 for a 97 speed index.

Terrorizer is owned by Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann and trained by Jason Olmstead. Bred by Steve D. Burns DVM, he is a $100,000 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale graduate. He is sired by champion One Famous Eagle and out of the Oak Tree Special mare Send Me Special. Terrorizer now has a record of 10-1-3-0 with earnings of $25,580.

Uncle Redheads crossed the wire in third under Armando Alvidrez. The gelding broke sharply and led along the inside before being caught late, finishing a half-length behind the winner in :20.143 for a 95 speed index.

Owned by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC and trained by Jason Olmstead, Uncle Redheads was bred by Charles and Elizabeth Horton. He is sired by Uncle D and out of the One Sweet Jess mare Redheads Run Hotter.

Uncle Redheads now holds a record of 16-8-4-2 with earnings of $258,155. His stakes victories include the Grade 3 Mr Master Bug Stakes and Grade 3 Valley Junction Futurity.

Wf Tuff As Diamonds finished fourth, followed by Half A House, Finz Up, Holliewood, Relentless Country and Eza One. Averys Marble Queen was scratched.
