Dark Water Bay Sets Time To Beat in the Jodys Glory Classic Trials On Sunday

MEXICO CITY, MEX–JULY 20, 2025–Dark Water Bay delivered a dominant performance in the second of two trials on Sunday at Hipodromo De Las Americas, securing the fastest qualifying time for the $41,315 Jodys Glory Classic. The 2-year-olds sprinted 350 yards with a spot in the August 10 final on the line.
With Heriberto Camacho in the irons, Dark Water Bay led gate to wire and pulled away for an emphatic 3 1/2-length win, clocking 17.252 seconds for a 92 speed index.
The victory marked the colt’s first win from four starts, pushing his career earnings to $20,000. Owned by Cuadra Alpuyeca and trained by Antonio Garcia, Dark Water Bay was bred in Oklahoma by Mike Vaughan.
The son of Mr Jess Perry is out of Aqua Girl by Corona Cartel. Dark Water Bay was purchased for $77,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. In addition to placing second to Pacific Surfliner in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge last month, he was also runner-up in the Prize Classic.
In the first trial, Pacific Surfliner showed late acceleration under jockey Huberclein Gomez to overtake Blue On The Run and win by 3/4-lengths, posting the second-fastest qualifying time of the day. The Oklahoma-bred daughter of Freighttrain B completed the 350 yards in 17.645 seconds, earning an 81 speed index.
Pacific Surfliner, trained by Julian Gutierrez for Cuadra JJ, was a $9,500 purchase at the 2024 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Bred by Kelly Yother Equine LLC, she is out of Ring A Ring Of Roses by Jess Lips.
Sunday’s win was her third from four starts and increased her earnings to more than $27,500. She gained attention earlier this summer with a longshot victory in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge, where she returned to win the finals by 2 ¼ lengths.
