ALTOONA, IA—SEPTEMBER 9, 2024—Multiple stakes-placed Cowboy 123 extended his win streak to three this evening while posting the fastest qualifying time for the Polk County Derby at Prairie Meadows Race Course.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from trials contested over 400 yards will return to the Iowa racetrack on Saturday, September 28, to vie for the winner's share of a $126,740 purse.

Under longtime rider, Berkley Packer Cowboy 123 cleared the field early on his way to a 1-1/2 length in the fastest time of 19.892 seconds, a 92-speed index into a 5 mph headwind.

Alex Wessels saddled the Iowa-bred gelding to his fourth win for owner Stephen Moyle in eight starts. Second in the Hawkeye Futurity and third in the Jim Bader Futurity last season, Cowboy 123 is a son of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 from the Corona Cartel mare Corona Carmelita. Paragon Farms LLC bred the $77,797 earner.

Ab Boogie, under jockey Alfredo Triana, Jr., won the first trial in 20.096 seconds, the second fastest, recording an 87-speed index into a 5 mph headwind. Trainer Manuel Campos conditions the son of champion sire Apollitical Blood for owner-breeder Ruben Mojica.

A multiple stakes winner, out of Boogie Wagon by Lil Kool Wagon, Ab Boogie has earned $96,780. He also has a three-race win streak, including the Cy-Hawk Stakes and the Cyclone Derby's previous two starts.
