Corona Streakin Jess Tops Polk County Derby Trials

Two trials were held for the $119,900-estimated Polk County Derby at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 7, with Corona Streakin Jess posting the fastest qualifying time.
The 400-yard trials were contested for registered Iowa-bred 3-year-olds.
Corona Streakin Jess won the closing trial under Ali Rivera, covering the distance in :20.318 to lead the qualifiers. The John Stinebaugh trainee races for RDS Legacy Racing LLC.
Bred by Jeff State, Corona Streakin Jess is by Corona Cartel and out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Streakin Jesszee. Coming off a victory in the Cyclone Derby, the gelding improved his record to 11-4-2-2 with earnings of $108,338. He finished third in the Jim Bader Futurity and was runner-up in last year's Hawkeye Futurity.
Follies Favorite finished second behind Corona Streakin Jess to post the second-fastest qualifying time of :20.434. Ridden by Ryder Olmstead for trainer Jason Olmstead, the homebred filly races for Robert and Sandra Brown. She is by Favorite Cartel and out of the Corona Cartel mare Follies and Corona. Follies Favorite has a record of 12-2-2-2 with earnings of $45,516. She finished fifth in the Cyclone Derby earlier this season and was fourth in last year's Hawkeye Futurity.
Royal Candy King won the opening trial under Armando Alvidrez, stopping the clock in :20.442 to post the third-fastest qualifying time. Trained by Jason Olmstead, the Summer Hill Farm LLC homebred is by Jess Good Candy and out of the Teller Cartel mare Tell Her Shes Queen.
Winner of last year's Jim Bader Futurity, Royal Candy King has compiled a record of 10-5-1-1 with earnings of $133,904. He also finished third in the Cyclone Derby earlier this season.
The $119,900-estimated Polk County Derby final is scheduled for Sept. 26 at Prairie Meadows.
