American Sparrow Gets Third Consecutive Win in the $59,594 Iowa Stallion Derby
ALTOONA, IA–AUGUST 17, 2024–After a late start, heavy favorite American Sparrow kicked it into high gear at the final stretch for a 1/2-length victory in the $59,594 Iowa Stallion Derby at Prairie Meadows on Saturday.
Miguel Ramirez, who piloted American Sparrow to victory in his last three starts, including clocking the fastest time in the trials, returns for the mount in the finals. The duo clocked a 90 speed index in :19.981 seconds. The 400-yard victory paid $3.20 to win on 1-2 odds.
Windys Sweet Favorit, ridden by Angel Ramirez, finished second a 1/2-length ahead of Ts Koko Inmyjeans and rider Jonathan Dominguez, who captured show.
The $26,817 winner's share of the purse boosted American Sparrow's bankroll to $77,607. The victory improved his race record to 3-3-1 from 11 starts. The son of Fast N Famous Jeans placed third in the Iowa Stallion Futurity and was a finalist in the Hawkeye Futurity last year.
The LXXI Racing Stables homebred is out of Wagonbelle by Lill Kool Wagon. Trainer Alex Wessels conditions American Sparrow.
Runner-up Windys Sweet Favorit had three victories in her freshman campaign but has yet to win a race in 2024. She placed second in the Chippewa Downs Open Derby and third in the Dan Lockie Derby and Dash For Cash Open Stakes. She has a record of 3-4-2 from 11 starts with $38,986 in earnings.
Trainer Tyler Stein saddled Windys Sweet Favorite for owners Amanda Haar and Abelardo Quintero. Michelle Meiwes bred the daughter of Go To The Gravel out of the Dashin Bye mare Windys Dashin Bye.
Thomas Scheckel bred and owns Ts Koko Inmyjeans, who has three wins from nine starts and $64,090 in the bank. The son of Fast N Famous Jeans won the Iowa Stallion Derby last year. Tony Jones trains the bay gelding out of Koko Taylor by Corona Cartel.
Rm Flyeasycash, Rio Winna, Wonderment, Joda Tempting Grave, Ts You Got Allmycash and Trs Big Jake complete the order of finish. Settin On Go was scratched.
