$200,000 Heritage Place Graduate Brink Man V Fastest In Day-2 ABQ Trials For All American Futurity
ALBUQUERQUE, NM–AUGUST 10, 2024–Brink Man V and jockey Francisco Calderon broke sharply from the middle and led throughout the thirteenth trial race to win and qualify fastest on Day 2 for the $3 million All American Futurity in 21.367 seconds for 440-yards Saturday at the Downs of Albuquerque.
"We got the tailwind and lucked out today," Calderon said in the winner's circle. "I've liked this horse from day one. He ran a tremendous race."
His qualifying sets up a rematch with Hezgothelook Z, who defeated Brink Man V in the Ruidoso Futurity on June 9 at Ruidoso Downs. Brink Man V finished third in the first triple crown race then took the Rainbow Futurity off to rest and prepare for today's All American trials.
Brink Man V was heavily favored by bettors who backed the youngster at thirty-cents, paying $2.60, $2.40 and $2.20.
The $200,000 Heritage Place September Yearling Sale graduate has two wins in three career starts for owner Sammy Valeriano and trainer Heath Taylor. Leading sire Apollitical Jess sired Brink Man V from the Corona Cartel mare Itea. William E. Smith bred Brink Man V in Oklahoma.
Jockey Bryan Candanosa rode $47,000 Heritage Place Yearling graduate Peepl R Scrambled to a one-length win in the final trial to get the second fastest time of 21.446 seconds, with a 15 mph tailwind.
Trainer Toby Keeton got his second qualifier to the rich All American Futurity final for owner Triple One Ranch LLC. They also own two-time Grade 1 winner Hezagotthelook Z, who qualified on Friday and will now look to become only the second Ruidoso Triple Crown winner in history on Labor Day.
Peepl R Scrambled broke her maiden at Ruidoso on July 13 and has compiled a (5) 2-1-1 record. Debbie Strebig bred the Apollitical Blood filly in Oklahoma from the Ivory James mare Peepl R Krazi.
Making his first start since winning the Grade 1 $1,081,820 Heritage Place Futurity on June 1, $50,000 supplement, Kempton was a half-length winner over West Texas Futurity(G2) winner Painted Eclipse in the 10th trial to get the third fastest time on 21.472 seconds into a five mph crosswind.
Trainer James J. Gonzalez, II saddled the Kiss My Hocks colt to his fourth win in as many starts for owner Ozaca Ranch, LLC. Tyler Graham and Namgis QHS LLC bred the bay colt in Texas from the Corona Cartel mare Charming Cartel. Champion jockey James Flores rode the $38,000 TQHA Yearling Sale repurchase. He has banked $474,986.
New Mexico homebred Kj Bad Moon Rising drew clear under jockey Christian Ramos in trial seven to win by 1-3/4 lengths to post the fourth fastest clocking on Day 2 of 21.518 seconds into a five mph crosswind.
Trainer Wesley T. Giles conditions the son of first-crop sire Kj Mucho Macho Man for owner-breeders John and Kathy Lee. Out of the First Moonflash mare, Kj Kiss Me Goodbye, KJ Bad Moon Rising was third in the restricted Grade 1 Zia QH Futurity at Albuquerque on July 28. He has earned $51,693 in four starts.
The only first-crop sire to get an All American Futurity(G1) qualifier this year, Kj Mucho Macho Man has already sired 36% black type from only 11 starters.
Lee's and Giles will be looking for their second All American Futurity win after campaigning two-time champion Kj Desperado to win the race in 2021.
Turners Hot Habit and jockey Jacob Enriquez finished a length-and-a-quarter behind Brink Man V in the fastest trial and still qualified with the fifth fastest time, 21.543 seconds for 440 yards.
Owner Franky Busani paid $90,000 for the son of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale last year. Ricardo G. Armendariz, Jr. conditions the Texas-bred gelding from the Walk Thru Fire mare One Hot Habit. Turner Farms is the breeder.
Today's five qualifiers will join the five from Friday's trials (see related story) to return to the Downs at Albuquerque on Labor Day and vie for the winner's share of the $3,000,000 purse worth $1,500,000.
