OQHRA Secures Rule Change to Improve Track Conditions for Trial Races
EDMOND, OK–MARCH 1, 2025–For years, Oklahoma has been one of the only states that did not allow starting gates to be moved between trial races. This rule was originally intended to ensure all horses started from an identical distance.
However, over time, it created challenges for horses in later trials, as the ground beneath and in front of the gate became uneven, dry, and unstable—making it difficult for horses to get a fair break.
Recognizing this issue, the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association (OQHRA) lobbied for a rule change at the state capitol. Beginning in 2025, tracks in Oklahoma will be allowed to move the starting gate between trial races, provided they use an approved device to ensure accurate placement, as verified by the horsemen’s representative and race stewards.
At Remington Park, the OQHRA Trainers Committee and the Board of Stewards have approved a block-marking system to maintain precise gate positioning. These blocks are staked deep into the ground to remain fixed between races while allowing water trucks and tractors to maneuver around them, ensuring the track is properly maintained for all competitors.
With the opening weekend full of trials, the starter and gate crew have already trained extensively with this new system, ensuring consistency from the first race to the last. This change is expected to create a fairer racing experience for all participants.
