Lucrative Iowa Program Available to Breeders (VIDEO)
DES MOINES, IA–FEBRUARY 24, 2025–The Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association has released a video detailing the advantages of owning an Iowa-bred horse. They urge horsemen to enroll their mares in the program.
Tom Lepic, President of IQHRA, noted that Prairie Meadows hosted 64 Iowa-bred Quarter Horse races in 2024. This not only proved beneficial for the program but was also advantageous for the entire industry. As a result of the program, sale prices for Iowa-bred horses have significantly increased over the past few years.
In 2024, IQHRA established a purse structure for an "Iowa-bred maiden special weight," which is designated for horses that have not yet won a race. The owner of the winning horse will receive 60% of the purse upon an Iowa-bred horse's first victory.
Iowa-bred horses are also eligible for purse supplements in restricted and open company races. If an Iowa-bred horse wins an open race, the owner receives the standard 60% of the purse, along with an additional 55% for participating in the program.
Additionally, the breeder of the Iowa-bred horse is entitled to 12% of any award money earned, which is based on the winning purse share.
