TULANCINGO, HIDALGO, MEX—October 8, 2026
Shake The Bank, an AQHA champion and multiple champion in Mexico whose legacy spans generations of stakes winners, producing mares and sires, died Wednesday of natural causes. She was 33.
Sinoé Roldán, a Quarter Horse trainer and grandson of her late owner, Héctor Roldán Espinosa, announced her passing in a message shared with fellow horsemen.
“The great mare Shake The Bank passed away today,” Roldán wrote. “Born in 1993, she died at age 33. She was a mare who gave so much to my family and me. She died of natural causes. May this great champion, with her exceptional heart and breeding, rest in peace.”
Bred in Oklahoma by legendary Quarter Horse breeder Walter Merrick, Shake The Bank was brought to Mexico by Don César Pedrero Anaya, recently inducted into the 2026 AQHA Hall of Fame. Distinguished Mexican horseman Héctor Roldán Espinosa purchased her and campaigned her during her celebrated racing career.
Espinosa founded Rancho Santa Fe in Tulancingo, Hidalgo, where Shake The Bank became a cornerstone of the breeding program. Following his passing, his son, Héctor Roldán Arreola, took over the family business. Arreola’s son, trainer Sinoé Roldán, continues the racing tradition—a three-generation dynasty strengthened by the mare’s lasting influence.
Foaled February 16, 1993, Shake The Bank is a daughter of Bully Bullion out of Shake Em Six, by Streakin Six. She earned a speed index of 105 and finished her career with 14 wins, six seconds and two thirds from 28 starts, banking $372,585.
Undefeated in four starts as a two-year-old at the Hipódromo de las Américas, Shake The Bank headed to Ruidoso Downs in 1995 after her owners, Héctor Roldán Espinosa and Ramiro Alpizar, paid the $50,000 supplemental fee to enter her in the All American Futurity. Trained by Juan Gonzalez, she won her trial by 1¼ lengths under jockey Henry Garcia.
Alpizar’s assessment following the trials captured a quality her family would remember throughout her life: “Everyone says she’s a little horse, but she’s got a big heart.”
Shake The Bank finished second to Winalota Cash in the All American Futurity (G1) and was named the 1995 AQHA Champion Two-Year-Old Filly.
During her three year old campaign in 1996, Shake The Bank earned Mexican champion and Mexican Champion Three-Year-Old Filly honors and was recognized as a Mexican Triple Crown winner and Superior Race Horse.
Racing through age 8, she won 13 of her 22 Mexican starts and added $83,207 to her U.S. earnings of $289,378. Her stakes victories included the Clasico Tequila Cazadores (G3), Derby Mexicano (G3), Mexico Derby Challenge, Clasico Beduino and Jose “Che” Mendez Futurity. In the Mexico Derby Challenge, she equaled the 400-yard track record of :19.380.
She also placed second in the AQHA Derby Challenge Championship (G2) and Futurity Mexicano, and third in the QHBC Championship Classic (G1) and the first division of the Z Wayne Griffin Director’s Stakes (G2).
Her racing accomplishments secured her place in history. Her contribution to Rancho Santa Fe’s breeding program carried that success into new generations.
Shake The Bank is the dam of 22 foals, including 17 starters, 12 winners and 16 Register of Merit earners. Her progeny combined for 30 wins and earnings of $588,077, led by three stakes winners and one stakes-placed runner.
Her leading earner, SF Royal Bank SI 100, returned the family to the All American Futurity spotlight in 2007. The son of Royal Quick Dash finished second to Heartswideopen, repeating his dam’s placing 12 years earlier. He won five races, earned $359,937, won the O B Cockerell Handicap (G3) and was also a Rainbow Derby (G1) finalist.
SF Royal Bank later became a multiple stakes winning sire whose offspring included SF Banko Aguerrido, a Futurity Subasta Selecta [RG3] winner with earnings of $182,144 and a speed index of 108. His daughter SF Banquerita Rockin won the Premio Shake The Bank, a race bearing her granddam’s name.
Shake The Bank’s One Famous Eagle son, Famous Bank, won three races, earned $60,659 and recorded a speed index of 95. He won the Hazel Park Bonus Challenge, earned Central Hi-Point Aged Stallion recognition and placed third in the El Primero Del Ano Derby (G3), Canterbury Championship Challenge and All American Congress Maturity.
Other notables include SF Simple Shake, who earned $33,486, won the Derby Criadores Mexicanos [RG3] and was named Mexico Hi-Point Three-Year-Old Filly; her son SF Simple Quick Dash, a sire and multiple stakes winner who earned $44,258; Ocean Paradise, a Grade 1 finalist who earned $70,181; and Shes The Bank, runner-up in the Futurity Mexicano with earnings of $11,224.
Through her daughter SF Snow Shake, she was also the granddam of SF Royal Shake Snow, a stakes winner and Mexico Hi-Point Three-Year-Old Gelding who earned $30,532; Mexican Bred Derby winner SF Shake A Mystery, who earned $25,112; stakes-placed SF Assault The Bank, an earner of $16,164; and sire SF Royal Snow.
Shake The Bank’s First Down Dash son SF Brave Heart extended her influence through Rancho Santa Fe’s stallion program. He sired Mexican champion SF Mexican Brave, winner of the Futurity Garañones [RG3] and an earner of $149,676, and SF Mexicana Brave, an AQHA Mexican champion and Mexican Champion Two-Year-Old Filly who earned $137,436. His other stakes winners included Derby México winner SF Mexican Heart and Clasico Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal winner SF Border Heart.
Shake The Bank’s sons Beduinos Shake and SF Tempting Bank also became sires, further expanding her contribution to the breeding industry.
Shake The Bank came from an exceptional maternal family. Her dam, Shake Em Six, was the 1996 Broodmare of the Year and also produced her half-brother Royal Shake Em. The Royal Quick Dash son earned $257,009, won the Sam Houston Futurity (G1) and Longhorn Futurity (G3), and finished second in the All American Derby (G1) before becoming a successful sire.
Her half-sister Shake Em Dash became the granddam of You Drive I Fly, the $590,134 earner who won the LQHBA Louisiana Million Futurity [RG1]. The Jet Black Patriot stallion, out of Shakemupperry, currently stands at Spring Hill Farms in Kaplan, Louisiana.
For the Roldáns, Shake The Bank’s legacy reached beyond statistics and pedigree pages. She carried their colors to an American championship, built an exceptional record in Mexico and supplied generations of runners and breeding stock for their ranch and across two countries.
From the ranch founded by Héctor Roldán Espinosa to the business carried forward by his son Héctor Roldán Arreola and the racing tradition continued by his grandson Sinoé Roldán, her influence remains woven into the history and future of Rancho Santa Fe.
Shake The Bank leaves the record of an outstanding race mare and the living legacy of a blue hen. The exceptional heart remembered by her family endures through the horses she produced and the generations that followed.
