Fathers and Sons: First Down Dash's Legendary Legacy Faces a Rising Challenge From Apollitical Jess

By H. David Smith, StallioneSearch

DALLAS, TX—October 23, 2026

For decades, First Down Dash has stood as the gold standard among Quarter Horse racing's sires of sires. His sons have dominated breeding programs across the country, producing generations of stakes winners and accumulating hundreds of millions of dollars in progeny earnings.

But a changing of the guard may be underway.

Apollitical Jess, the 19-year-old son of Mr Jess Perry, has climbed to within $1.23 million of First Down Dash's all-time progeny earnings record. More significantly, his own sons are beginning to establish themselves among the industry's most successful breeding stallions at a remarkable pace.

The comparison reveals two extraordinary stallions at very different stages of their breeding legacies.

First Down Dash, foaled in 1984, leads the all-time rankings with $90,941,058 in progeny earnings. Apollitical Jess, born 23 years later in 2007, is second with $89,712,657.

While First Down Dash has had more than three decades for his sons and grandsons to establish themselves, Apollitical Jess has reached his current earnings total in approximately 13 racing seasons.

That rapid ascent is impressive enough. But the emergence of Flying Cowboy 123, Apollitical Blood, KJ Mucho Macho Man, and Chilitos suggests that Apollitical Jess's influence may extend well beyond his own progeny earnings.

First Down Dash: The Standard for Sires of Sires

Few stallions in Quarter Horse racing history have demonstrated the ability to produce successful breeding sons as consistently as First Down Dash.

According to StallioneSearch.com's October 23 All-Time Leading Sires by Money Earned rankings, eight direct sons of First Down Dash appear among the industry's Top 50.

They include FDD Dynasty (No. 7), Walk Thru Fire (No. 9), Valiant Hero (No. 13), Tempting Dash (No. 28), Royal Quick Dash (No. 35), Dash Ta Fame (No. 38), Stoli (No. 43) and Okey Dokey Dale (No. 48).

Collectively, those eight sons have sired earners of $215,805,850.

FDD Dynasty leads the group with $44,075,244, followed closely by Walk Thru Fire at $42,119,572. Valiant Hero has added another $33,279,016.

The influence extends another generation. Tempting Dash's son Kiss My Hocks ranks No. 37 among all-time leading sires with $19,598,379 in progeny earnings.

Including that grandson, the First Down Dash male line accounts for nine of the 50 leading sires, representing more than $235 million in combined progeny earnings among those nine stallions.

It is an extraordinary breeding legacy, one built over decades and across multiple generations.

However, First Down Dash's dominance also provides an important perspective when evaluating the rapidly developing sons of Apollitical Jess.

Apollitical Jess: Closing the Gap at Record Pace

Apollitical Jess entered the breeding ranks more than two decades after First Down Dash, but the difference in their lifetime progeny earnings has nearly disappeared.

With $89,712,657, Apollitical Jess trails First Down Dash by just $1,228,401.

The speed of that accomplishment is remarkable.

First Down Dash's first foals began racing in 1991, while Apollitical Jess's first runners reached the track in 2014.

Although higher purses and changing racing economics make direct comparisons between generations imperfect, Apollitical Jess has accumulated nearly the same lifetime progeny earnings in substantially fewer racing seasons.

And now his sons are beginning to make their own marks.

Two direct sons of Apollitical Jess, Flying Cowboy 123 and Apollitical Blood, already rank among the Top 50 all-time leading sires. Two additional sons, Chilitos and KJ Mucho Macho Man, are rapidly establishing themselves as successful young stallions, each with only three crops to race. Together, these four sons have sired 132 stakes winners and accumulated more than $59.2 million in progeny earnings.

Flying Cowboy 123: A Remarkable Four-Crop Achievement

Perhaps the most compelling evidence of Apollitical Jess's emerging influence as a sire of sires is Flying Cowboy 123.

The 2016 son of Apollitical Jess has vaulted to No. 20 on the all-time leading sires list after just four crops to race.

According to Equineline statistics updated October 20, Flying Cowboy 123 has 673 foals of racing age, including 575 starters and 354 winners. His offspring include 63 stakes winners and 66 additional stakes-placed runners, with lifetime earnings of $28,276,227.

His average earnings per starter stand at an exceptional $49,176.

Even more impressive, Flying Cowboy 123 has produced those results with only four crops, while many of the stallions he has already surpassed accumulated their earnings over considerably longer breeding careers.

His 63 stakes winners represent approximately 11% of his starters, an outstanding rate for a stallion at this stage of his career.

His 2026 statistics are equally impressive.

Through October 20, Flying Cowboy 123's runners have earned $11,117,624 this year alone. His current crop of 255 two-year-olds has produced 211 starters, 91 winners and nine stakes winners, earning $7,002,181.

Those numbers demonstrate both the size of his breeding program and the remarkable productivity of his offspring.

His four-crop performance places him among the most rapidly ascending sires in Quarter Horse racing history, and his climb to No. 20 raises the possibility that he is the youngest stallion ever to reach the Top 50 all-time earnings list.

If that historical distinction is confirmed, it would represent another significant milestone for the Apollitical Jess male line.

Flying Cowboy 123 has already surpassed such established sires as Mr Eye Opener, Ivory James, Separatist and Tempting Dash in lifetime progeny earnings.

And with additional crops progressing through their racing careers, his position among the all-time leaders could continue to improve dramatically.

Apollitical Blood: Another Son Among the Elite

Flying Cowboy 123 is not alone.

Apollitical Blood, a 2012 son of Apollitical Jess, ranks No. 34 among the all-time leading sires with $21,082,996 in progeny earnings, according to the October 23 rankings.

His October 20 Equineline report, covering eight crops to race, lists 630 foals of racing age, 492 starters, 338 winners and 48 stakes winners.

His runners have earned $21,064,352, averaging $42,814 per starter.

Nearly 69% of his starters have become winners, further demonstrating the consistency of the Apollitical Jess male line.

Apollitical Blood's record is particularly noteworthy because his breeding career has developed on a different timetable than Flying Cowboy 123's.

With eight crops to race, Apollitical Blood has established a substantial record of production, while Flying Cowboy 123 has climbed even higher in the rankings with only half as many crops.

Together, the two sons have produced 111 stakes winners and accumulated approximately $49.3 million in lifetime progeny earnings, based on their October 20 Equineline reports.

Those figures provide a strong foundation for the developing Apollitical Jess sire-of-sires legacy.

KJ Mucho Macho Man: The Next Generation Is Already Arriving

Another emerging son of Apollitical Jess is KJ Mucho Macho Man, whose early breeding statistics suggest that the sire line's influence is continuing to expand.

With only three crops to race, KJ Mucho Macho Man is the leading third-crop sire of 2026.

According to Equineline statistics updated October 20, his 140 foals of racing age have produced 98 starters, 49 winners and seven stakes winners.

His runners have earned $4,485,276, averaging an impressive $45,768 per starter.

That average is particularly significant considering the relatively small number of foals he has produced compared with many established stallions.

KJ Mucho Macho Man has an Average Earnings Index of 2.69, exceeding both Flying Cowboy 123's 2.31 and Apollitical Blood's 1.89.

His 2026 runners have earned $2,065,363, including $1,617,548 from his current two-year-olds.

With only 98 lifetime starters, KJ Mucho Macho Man has already produced seven stakes winners, representing approximately 7% of his starters.

His lifetime earnings remain below the threshold needed to enter the current Top 50 all-time list, where No. 50 Special Leader has accumulated $13,779,041.

However, that comparison underscores the difference in breeding age rather than diminishing his accomplishments.

While Flying Cowboy 123 and Apollitical Blood have already established themselves among the all-time leaders, KJ Mucho Macho Man represents another young son whose early results suggest considerable potential.

Chilitos: Another Rising Star With Just Three Crops

The growing influence of Apollitical Jess as a sire of sires extends to another promising young stallion, Chilitos, whose first three crops have already produced more than $5.4 million in progeny earnings.

According to Equineline statistics updated October 20, 2026, Chilitos has 247 foals of racing age, including 172 starters, 104 winners and 14 stakes winners. His runners have accumulated $5,428,014 in earnings, averaging $31,558 per starter.

His 14 stakes winners represent more than 8% of his starters, an impressive achievement for a stallion with only three crops to race. He has also sired 12 stakes-placed runners.

During 2026, Chilitos has recorded 118 starters, 52 winners and four stakes winners, with current-year earnings of $1,854,615.

His current crop of 67 two-year-olds has produced 47 starters, 20 winners and one stakes winner, earning $993,581.

Like fellow Apollitical Jess son KJ Mucho Macho Man, Chilitos is still in the early stages of his breeding career. Yet both have already demonstrated the ability to sire stakes-caliber runners and generate substantial progeny earnings.

Together, the two third-crop stallions have produced 21 stakes winners and earned more than $9.9 million.

With Flying Cowboy 123 and Apollitical Blood already established among the Top 50 all-time leading sires, the emergence of Chilitos and KJ Mucho Macho Man provides further evidence that Apollitical Jess is developing a growing roster of successful breeding sons.

And with additional crops yet to reach the racetrack, the full influence of the Apollitical Jess male line may still be years away from being realized.

Mr Jess Perry: The Dynasty Behind the Dynasty

The emergence of Apollitical Jess as a sire of sires is especially significant when considering his own pedigree.

His sire, Mr Jess Perry, already ranks among the most influential sires of sires in Quarter Horse racing history.

The 1992 son of Streakin La Jolla ranks No. 5 on the all-time leading sires list with $64,064,548 in progeny earnings.

But his influence extends far beyond those earnings.

Seven direct sons of Mr Jess Perry appear among the Top 50 all-time leading sires, including Apollitical Jess himself.

They are Apollitical Jess (No. 2), One Famous Eagle (No. 8), Jess Louisiana Blue (No. 19), Feature Mr Jess (No. 27), Jesse James Jr (No. 30), One Sweet Jess (No. 36) and Eye Am King (No. 45).

Collectively, those seven sons have sired earners of more than $245 million.

Through Apollitical Jess, Mr Jess Perry also has two grandsons among the Top 50: Flying Cowboy 123 and Apollitical Blood.

Another grandson, Hes Relentless, a son of One Famous Eagle, ranks No. 32 with $22,490,319.

That gives Mr Jess Perry seven direct sons and three grandsons among the Top 50 all-time leading sires.

The comparison is particularly revealing.

First Down Dash has eight direct sons among the Top 50, while Mr Jess Perry has seven.

Both stallions have demonstrated the rare ability to pass their exceptional racing genetics to sons capable of establishing successful breeding careers of their own.

Apollitical Jess now appears positioned to extend that tradition into another generation.

The Numbers Behind the Emerging Apollitical Jess Dynasty

The four sons of Apollitical Jess examined in this report—Flying Cowboy 123, Apollitical Blood, Chilitos, and KJ Mucho Macho Man—have collectively produced:

  • 1,690 foals of racing age
  • 1,337 starters
  • 845 winners
  • 132 stakes winners
  • $59,253,869 in progeny earnings

Those figures are based on their October 20 Equineline reports.

Flying Cowboy 123 accounts for more than $28.2 million of the total, Apollitical Blood for more than $21 million, Chillitos for $5,428,014, and KJ Mucho Macho Man for nearly $4.5 million.

Their combined production is particularly noteworthy because two of the three stallions have only four and three crops to race, respectively.

While First Down Dash's leading sons have accumulated their records across decades, these younger Apollitical Jess sons are producing substantial earnings at relatively early stages of their breeding careers.

Is the Tide Turning?

First Down Dash established an extraordinary standard as a sire of sires, placing eight direct sons among the Top 50 all-time leading Quarter Horse sires. His influence across generations remains one of the breed's greatest breeding achievements.

But the tide may be turning toward a younger dynasty. Apollitical Jess has nearly matched First Down Dash's lifetime progeny earnings in considerably fewer racing seasons, while four of his sons—Flying Cowboy 123, Apollitical Blood, Chilitos, and KJ Mucho Macho Man—have already combined to sire 132 stakes winners and earn more than $59.2 million.

Two have reached the all-time Top 50, while the other two have only three crops to race.

And behind Apollitical Jess stands his own sire, Mr Jess Perry, whose seven direct sons among the Top 50 demonstrate that the ability to produce outstanding breeding stallions runs deep in this remarkable male line.

First Down Dash's legacy was built over decades. Apollitical Jess's legacy as a sire of sires is still unfolding, but the early returns suggest that Quarter Horse racing may be witnessing the emergence of its next great breeding dynasty.
