The All American Futurity was inaugurated in 1959 with a purse of $129,686 and has long been recognized as the richest race in American Quarter Horse racing. Its purse surpassed $1 million in 1978, and in 1982, the winner received $1 million for the first time. The total purse exceeded $2 million in 2011 before reaching $3 million in 2015.
The 440-yard classic is the final leg of American Quarter Horse racing’s Triple Crown. Since the three-race series began in 1964, only two horses have completed the sweep: Special Effort in 1981 and Hezgothelook Z in 2024.
Following the devastating flooding in the Ruidoso, New Mexico, area during the summer of 2024, the All American Futurity was relocated to The Downs at Albuquerque. The race remains there in 2026 as recovery efforts continue at Ruidoso Downs. Although conducted at a different venue, the All American Futurity continues its proud tradition of attracting the nation’s finest 2-year-old Quarter Horses each Labor Day weekend.
