SUNLAND PARK, NM—JANUARY 5, 2022—Fifty-five New Mexico-bred 3-year-old Quarter Horses are entered in Friday’s 400-yard Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) trials at Sunland Park.

Flashin Fire, a sorrel son of champion First Moonflash racing for Josefina Guzman, ended his 2-year-old campaign with a four-race win streak that included the August 1, $320,000 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs, and the October 31, $301,000 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park. A $20,000 claim from his career debut at Remington Park on April 11, the gelding has earned $292,010 from six starts.

Flashin Fire drew post 9 and will be ridden by Juan Pulido for trainer Santos Carrizales Jr. in the last of six trials.

Dashin Approach is coming off of a 2-year-old season during which the gelded son of Mr Pyc To You banked $82,294 from eight races and scored a three-quarter length victory in the May 23, $113,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park. The homebred gelding is trained by Arturo Chavez for owners George and Peggy Cobb.

Dashin Approach drew post 6 and will be ridden by Jose D. Ruiz in the third heat.

Trainer Eric Valenzuela will send out Daddys Mony for owners Julie A. Schoenhofer and Maricela Vasquez, who purchased the sorrel daughter of Big Daddy Cartel as a yearling for $34,500 at the 2020 New Mexico-Bred Sale. Daddys Mony earned $52,217 from seven starts during her 2-year-old season, and her record included a third-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind Flashin Fire, in the Zia Futurity.

Daddys Mony drew post 8 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos in the first trial.

Cowboy Zulu will be facing state-breds again off of his fifth-place run, two lengths behind winner Muy Peligrosito, in the 440-yard, $100,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship Stakes (G2) at Zia Park on December 5. The homebred graded stakes placed Zulu Dragon gelding races for Chuck Sonnenberg and trainer Fred Danley.

Cowboy Zulu drew the rail post and will be ridden by Mario Delgado in the third heat.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday’s Shue Fly Stakes trials will meet in the January 29, $125,000-added final.
