Northlands Futurity Winner Jess Doin Time Headlines NCQHRA Futurity at Canterbury Park

SHAKOPEE, MN—AUGUST 10, 2018—Minnesota sports fans collectively cheered on July 8 as Minnesota’s own Jess Doin Time won the $146,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity – the richest Quarter Horse race of the 2018 Canterbury Park meet and the second richest race for either breed at the track this year. The Minnesota-bred filly was just the fourth state-bred horse to win the race in over 30 years of its history.

Jess Doin Time, trained by Jason Olmstead and owned and bred by Tom and Jan Pouliot, returned on July 22 to qualify for the $50,000 North Central Quarter Horse Racing Association Futurity, the fourth fastest qualifier from five trials. Cristian Esqueda will return for the mount.

The Apollitical Jess filly has won three of her four lifetime starts and will enter the paddock as the 5-2 morning line favorite.

Zoes Sassy Miracle, the fastest qualifier, will break from the inside for trainer Mark Barnes with Julian Serrano aboard. The Capo de Capi filly has never been worse than second in four career starts, three of which have come in Minnesota. She won the $20,000 Northlands Juvenile, a consolation race for the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, as the post-time favorite.

The winner of the first futurity of the Canterbury season returns to the NCQHRA Futurity. BHR Flashing Effort, from the Bob Johnson barn, won the $30,300 Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity in June, qualified for the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, and qualified for the third futurity of the meet. Jake Samuels will ride the consistent 2-year-old gelding in Saturday’s futurity.

The NCQHRA Futurity continues a tradition of supporting ownership and breeding in states in the former AQHA North Central region, including Minnesota as well as North and South Dakota and many states in the Midwest and Intermountain region.

The $50,000 North Central Quarter Horse Racing Association Futurity is Race 2 on Saturday, August 11 at Canterbury Park. Estimated post time is 1:19 pm CT.
