Southwesterly Blows To First Stakes Win In John Deere Arizona Juvenile Challenge

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ–JULY 30, 2022–Fastest qualifier Southwesterly defeated Ms Flaming Finish by a neck to record her first career black type win in Saturday's $90,508 John Deere Arizona Downs Juvenile Challenge at Arizona Downs.

Southwesterly broke well under jockey Martin Osuna, holding a slight lead throughout she completed the 350 yards in a :17.398 seconds on a sloppy (sealed) racing surface, equaling a career high 109 speed index. It was the second win in as many starts for the daughter of leading sire Favorite Cartel.

Trainer John Allred conditions the gray filly for owner Scott McDaniel, who purchased Southwesterly for $37,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Mixed Sale last October. Steve Burns, DVM bred the filly from the Separatist mare Separate Tac.

The $49,779 winner's purse today boosted Southwesterly's earnings mark to $54,179 following her trial win on July 9th.

The win also includes a starting spot in the Grade 2 $125,000-est. John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship to be held October 22nd at Horseshoe Indianapolis during the Bank of American Challenge Championships.

Crush The Curve Futurity winner Ms Flaming Finish came in at the start under jockey Jesus Canales but finished strong to earn $18,102 for second. Javier Duarte conditions the daughter of leading sire Mr Jess Perry for owner LG Racing, LLC.

Also a Los Alamitos' sale graduate for $37,000, Ms Flaming Finish is out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Flaming Chula. Bred in California by George and Sandra Villalobos, the sorrel filly has compiled a (5) 2-2-1 record and banked $45,462 this year.

Winless in four starts, Mr Snootie Cartel finished a neck back in the blanket-finish to earn $9,051 for third. Priscillo Leon named jockey David Reyes-Frisby to ride the son of multiple stakes winner Mr Ease Cartel for owner Aaron Zazueta Grijalva.

Ronald and Jeryl Hartley bred the $7,000 Los Alamitos Equine Mixed Sale graduate in California. She is out of the Favorite Cartel mare Snootie Socialite.

Itz Goin Down, Prince Shasta, Ignytion, Whiskey Wes and Sockit Tooya completed the field. Arrogance and Mister Jim were both scratched.
