Tyger King Roars To Victory In Stakes-Caliber Featured Allowance Thursday At Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–MARCH 28, 2024–Tyger King had not won a race in almost a year, but he roared to victory on Thursday night at Remington Park in a race filled with stakes-caliber horses.

The 4-year-old American Quarter Horse by Apollitical Jess, out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Cruzin the Wagon, had not won since a trip to the Remington Park winner’s circle last year during the Heritage Place Derby trials on May 13 over a sloppy track. On Thursday night, however, he was returning to one of his favorite distances – 300 yards. He is now two-for-two at that distance, both at Remington Park.

Jockey Mario Delgado had been languishing in a world of seconds and thirds this meet until this big win. He only had two mounts on this night, and his inability to get his horses across the wire first was accentuated by his second-place finish in the third race aboard Patriotic View. Going into Tyger King’s race, Delgado’s meet marks were 47 starts, one win, nine seconds and 10 thirds.

Tyger King wasn’t about to add to those place and show woes, however as he burst from the gate like some fresh steaks had been tossed into his cage. He pounced to the lead and never gave it up from the outside No. 8 post, outlasting runner-up Awesome View (9-1) by a head at the finish.

Tyger King broke his drought as did Delgado with trainer Cody Noel getting the win for owner Reliance Ranches (Micah McKinney) of Guthrie, Okla. Noel had been caught in a bit of a rough spot as well coming into the night at 25-1-3-5 for the meet and now is at 27-2-4-5.

A Dream to Fill (5-1) checked in third, another neck back, for the blanket three-horse finish. Tyger King, as the 3-2 wagering favorite, paid $5 to win, $3 to place and $2.40 to show. The winner earned $20,988 from the $37,625 purse to improve to 19 starts, five wins, four seconds and five thirds and a bankroll of $126,215.

Tyger King had won at 300 yards against allowance non-winners of three here last year and tonight’s allowance race was for Oklahoma-bred horses with that as the only restriction. Tyger King had come close to winning his Remington Park 2024 debut last out over a sloppy track at 250 yards, but missed by a head to Relentless Diamond.

Last year after winning at this distance, he entered the Mr Master Bug Stakes and finished fourth to Ivory Senator. He followed that with his Derby trial victory and then ran eighth in the final. His best outing in four tries, two apiece at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico and Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, proved fruitless as the best he could manage was a fourth. His luster returned when his trailer saw the Oklahoma City signs on the highway.

Tyger King covered the distance in :15.595 on a fast track for an 86 speed index. He was bred in Oklahoma by his owner.

Remington Park racing continues Friday night with first post time of 6 p.m. CDT, followed by the final night of live racing this on Saturday. Remington Park will not conduct a racing program on Easter Sunday.
