Bryan Candanosa, Guillermo Valdivia Earn Lip Chip Jockey, Trainer Of Week Off Remington Futurity Win

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 1, 2024–By virtue of their big victory in the $854,775 Remington Park Futurity on Monday, April 29 with Heavens Uncle, Bryan Candanosa and Guillermo Valdivia have been named Lip Chip Jockey and Trainer of the Week.

That wasn’t all the duo did this week, however. Candanosa’s horses earned $553,672 for the week, compared to jockey Roman Cruz whose mounts made $179,521 for a distant second in that statistical category. Candanosa also won with 27-percent of his mounts, winning 6-of-22. Those wins also included victory in the American Paint Classic Futurity on Sunday with Painted to Be Quick, a 2-year-old Paint horse.

Heavens Uncle earned $359,005 while Painted to Be Quick brought home $60,648. Only one other jockey had six victories during Remington Park racing from April 25-29 – Juan Pulido.

Candanosa won two stakes of six races on Monday’s makeup card that was washed out by severe weather that struck Oklahoma City on Saturday night. His other stakes win Monday was with Jess Good Wine in the $100,000 Dee Raper Sooner State Stakes.

Valdivia won 4-of-10 starts this past week for a red-hot 40 percent, the best winning percentage of any trainer in the top 10 for the week. With the trip to the winner’s circle in the Remington Park Futurity, Valdivia was easily the top trainer in money earned this past week. He collected $465,832 from purses for his owners, far more than the runner-up of Toby Keeton’s $171,267. Valdivia also won the Grade 2 Easy Date Stakes on Monday with Relentless Diamond.

Going into May racing at Remington Park, Candanosa sits in fifth place in the standings with 20 winners this meet. He is behind leader Ali Rivera’s 28 in first, Roman Cruz with 26 in second, Francisco Calderon with 22 in third and Edwin Escobedo with 21 in fourth.

The top five in trainers’ standings are John Stinebaugh first with 19 winners, Matt Whitekiller with 18 in second, followed by Dee Keener in a tie with Keeton in third with 17 and Eddie Willis has 16 in fifth. Valdivia resides in a three-way tie for 11th with Luz Chavira and Jesus Ruiz. They all have nine wins.

Remington Park racing continues this week with a Thursday-Sunday schedule, May 2-5. The first race on Thursday and Friday is 6pm. Saturday racing begins at Noon with eh simulcast of the Kentucky Derby featured at 5:55pm. Sunday racing starts at 4pm. All times are Central.
