EL RENO, OK–MAY 16, 2024–The American Quarter Horse Association has hired Shari Burger as a QData pedigree systems analyst. Burger will write pedigrees and assist in sale catalog production, project management, and QData custom software design.

COALVILLE, UT–MAY 15, 2024–Funeral services for James Boyd Padgett, 73, of Coalville, Utah, will be held at noon (MDT) Saturday (May 18) at the Coalville Utah LDS Stake Center, 40 N. Main Street, Coalville.

Loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Padgett passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Monday.

A viewing will be held Friday, May 17, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, at The Ledges Event Center 202 Park Road, Coalville, Utah. A small viewing will be held before the funeral service Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30. Burial will be at Coalville City Cemetery.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 15, 2024–On the back of qualifying three to the finals of the Grade 1, $1,081,820 Heritage Place Futurity and the Grade 2, $239,050 Heritage Place Derby, Nestor Duran and Juan Diaz, Jr., have been named Lip Chip Jockey and Trainer of the Week.

That combination was successful in qualifying two to the Futurity finals set for closing night, Saturday, June 1 and one to the Derby scheduled the same evening. Duran was in the saddle for all three for Diaz.

On top of that, that jockey/trainer combo scored an amazing five wins from seven starters last week and one other ran second. The winning percentage of 71 percent is almost impossible in this game and 86 percent of the time they were first or second.

PHOENIX, AZ–MAY 15, 2024–According to an article by Matt Hegarty posted on the Daily Racing Form's website today, Arizona horsemen have reached a deal with the owners of Turf Paradise that will allow the track to race for the next three years.

State racing officials said Tuesday that the new deal will maintain approximately 100 days of racing each year. Previously the racetrack was expected to close last year.

According to Vince Francia, the track's longtime general manager, the three-year deal will guarantee four days of live racing each week from the first weekend in November to the first Saturday in May through 2027. That has been Turf Paradise's traditional racing season for decades.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 8, 2024–Edwin Escobedo and Jason Olmstead proved tough to beat on the racetrack this past week and by virtue of their dominant statistics earned Lip Chip Jockey and Trainer of the Week for May 2-5.

Neither horseman had a jockey or trainer within three victories of the number of wins they compiled for the week. Escobedo made seven trips to the winner’s circle, six of those for Olmstead, of Pryor, Okla. They combined last year at Remington Park to win the rider title while the trainer won the most Quarter Horse races and repeated as the top trainer in the country the past couple of years by wins.
