Funeral Services Set Thursday for Oklahoma Horseman Andy Smith

NORMAN, OK—NOVEMBER 15, 2021— Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (CST) Thursday (Nov. 18) at the Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 North Porter Avenue in Norman, Oklahoma for longtime Oklahoma horseman Andrew "Andy" Smith.

Smith, of Norman, died on November 10th following a long battle with kidney disease and diabetes. He was 71.

Mr. Smith was born to Harris S. Smith and Winona Catherine Smith on August 25, 1950. He grew up in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Ardmore High School in 1968. He attended college at Oklahoma State University, East Central, and Southeastern, where he earned a degree in physical education with a minor in speech.

Mr. Smith married his wife of 48 years, Melody Hamilton Smith on August 11, 1973. The Smiths made their home in Ardmore, where they raised two children, Jason and Jill.

Mr. Smith had a long career of more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, where he ran Ardmore Drilling Co.

He also bred and owned racehorses, a family tradition that dates back to his grandparents. His most successful Quarter Horses include Wicked Courage, a son of Captain Courage who won nine consecutive races from 2012-13, including the 2013 Ruidoso (G1) and Rainbow (G1) derbies.

Mr. Smith also enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Timothy Neal Smith. He is survived by his wife Melody; his two children, Jason Smith (Leah Smith) of Ardmore and Jill Davis (Kasey Davis) of Norman; two brothers, Harris S. Smith II and Dr. Adam Smith; and grandchildren Lauren and Jackson Smith and Logan and Luke Davis. Andy also has many nieces, nephews, cousins, and several long-time friends.
