Stel Corona Dies at 20

MENIFEE, CA—FEBRUARY 24, 2020—Burns Ranch reported today their multiple stakes winner and multiple champion sire Stel Corona died suddenly today. He was 20-year-old.

In statement on Burn Ranch's Facebook they said "We are saddened to say we lost an amazing stallion. He will be missed at Burns Ranch."

Owned by a syndicate, the son of leading sire Corona Cartel was a Grade 2 stakes winner. He won or placed in 16 of 25 career starts and earned $111,584. Trained by Paul Jones he won the PCQHRA Breeders' Derby(G2), Sooner Trailer Stakes, Huntington Habour Handicap and was second in the Pomona Express Stakes and 3rd and Burbank Handicap.

He was also a finalist in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby(G1), Southern California Derby(G1) and Independence Day Handicap.

From 13 crops to race, Stel Corona has sired 286 winners, 71 stakes horses (15%), 2 champions, earners of $10.8 million with average earnings per starter of nearly $24,000.

Stel Corona is the sire of 2008 AQHQ Racing Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Foose SI 102 ($1,616,938), winner of the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity, Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby, Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders' S.-G3 and was second in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1.

Foose, who also stands at Burns Ranch is one of the industry's leading young sires. From eight crops to race he has sired 19% stakes horses, earners of $11. 4 million and average earnings per starter of $27,700.

Stel Corona also sired AQHA Racing Champion Aged Mare Quirky SI 92 ($424,098) winner of the Grade 1 Southern California Derby(G1), Grade 1 Mildred N Vessels Memorial Handicap and Grade 2 Charger Bar Handicap.

Stel Corona's dam was the stakes-producing Streakin Six mare Our Lips Are Sealed, a sister to Grade 3 winner Makeover SI 104 ($68,734). The second dam was is the stakes-placed Merridoc mare Secret Meeting, dam of 8 black type.
