From Above Bests Thoroughbred Competition In $25,000 Classy Sheikh Stakes at Turf Paradise Racetrack

PHOENIX, AZ—NOVMEBER 25, 2022—Multiple stakes winner From Above rushed to an early lead, set the pace early under jockey Ezequiel Lara, then then opened to as much as five lengths down the stretch before defeating Capital Expense (TB) by 1-1/4 lengths in the $25,000 Classy Sheikh Stakes at Turf Paradise Racetrack Friday afternoon.

Conditioned by trainer Jesus Olivas-Valenzuela, the California-bred son of Kiddy Up completed the 870 yards in :45.465 seconds, equaling a 94 speed index into a 6 mph headwind. It was the sixth career win and second stakes victory for the 4-year-old.

Owned by Pedro Espinoza, From Above banked $15,035 for today's effort to bring his lifetime earnings line to just under $70,000. Edward C. Allred bred From Above from the thoroughbred daughter of In Excess (IRE), Celestial Being.

Runner-up Capital Expense (TB), a son of Scots Pine from the Petersburg mare Miss Current Sea, has won or placed six times against Quarter Horse company and earned $25,882 after picking up $4,850 today. Trainer Robert Baze named jockey Alex Cruz to ride the 9-year-old gelding for owner Michel Loynes. L D'Rado Thoroughbreds bred the gray gelding in British Columbia.

Another thoroughbred, El Chavo Del Ocho, finished 1-1/2 lengths back to earn $21,425 for third. Justin Evans trains the California-bred son of Tannersmyman for himself and co-owner Max Franklin. Joseph A. Duffel and Woodbridge Farm bred the stakes winner of more than $355,000 from the Artax mare My Sis Liz. Ridden by jockey Isaias Enriquez, El Chavo Del Ocho was making his first start against Quarter Horses.

Hey Pilgrim, Brazen Now, Dusalut, Master Ruler and Highwire Dance completed the field. Jaxx Hands was scratched.
