FREDRICKSBURG, TX—AUGUST 14, 2022—Stakes-paled Mr de Capi raced to a one-length win on Sunday while setting the fastest qualifying time for the Gillespie County Derby at the Gillespie County Fairground.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Gillespie County Fairground on Sunday, August 28th to vie for the winner's share of a $99,150 purse going 350 yards.

Mr de Capi got a perfect trip under jockey Joe Martinez to establish the top qualifying mark of :17.249 seconds, a 109 speed index into a 6 mph crosswind. It was the fourth win in eight starts for the son of multiple stakes sire Capo de Capi.

Angel Sanchez trains the Oklahoma-bred gelding for owner Jesus Olvera.  Second in the Retama Park Derby in his last start on July 30th, Mr de Cap has banked $78,046.  Charles and Elizabeth Horton bred Mr de Capi from the One Sweet Jess mare Redheads Run Hotter.

Swags, a graded stakes-placed son of leading sire Kiss My Hocks, finished second in the trial to record the second fastest clocking of :17.428 seconds, a 104 speed index. Trainer Adrian Huitron named jockey Jorge Garcia to ride the Oklahoma-bred colt for owner Luciano Gutierrez, IV.

Haskell Evans bred Swags from the Separatist mare Check The Account. Second in the Grade 2 Firecracker Derby in his last start, Swags has earned $65,840 in 12 career starts.
