TQHA Yearling Sale Boasts Increases On Day 1

SAN ANTONIO, TX—JULY 23, 2021—Following an outstanding sale in 2020 and fueled by an enthusiastic crowd of buyers today (Friday), the 24th annual TQHA Yearling Sale posted increased numbers again today compared to day 1 of the 2020 sale conducted during last year's COVID-19 pandemic.

The TQHA Yearling Sale, the first Quarter Horse yearling sale of the season, saw 120 hips go through the ring today, with 87 sold for gross receipts of $1,677,100. That's a 20% increase over the 2020 session opening receipts of $1,345,800 on 77 head sold.

Average price today was $19,277, a 10% increase over last year's opening day average of $17,254. The median rose 31% to $14,500, compared to $10,000 on 2020's day 1.

"It was a great first day," outgoing TQHA Executive Director Val Clark said Friday evening. "We expect tomorrow to be even better with another great set of Texas-bred yearlings set to sell."

AQHA Champion Breeder Bobby D. Cox consigned the three high-sellers in the TQHA opening session on Friday.

Dillion Lane paid $80,000 for the opening session high-seller, Hip 113 Moonshinyn. The son of AQHA Racing Champion and second-crop sire Moonin The Eagle is out of multiple Grade 1winner and AQHA Racing Champion 2-Year-Old and 2-Year-Old Filly J Fire Up by Kiddy Up.

Hip 103 Turcotte, a half-brother to three stakes horses, brought $75,000 from buyer Jose E. Guzman. The Bobby D. Cox consignee is out of Ruidoso Futurity(G1) winner Jess Significant. The second dam is champion and champion producer Significant Speed.

Cy Perry and Mary G. Thompson paid Cox $70,000 for Hip 103 Victori Danz, a daughter of Duponte from the first crop of Grade 1 winner Miss Feet Down First, by Dominyun.

Kemo Sabe, a Tempting Dash colt out of Grade 3 winner Lassie O Toole by Jody O Toole, also brought a bid of $70,000 from buyer James Greenlee Murry, Jr. to tie for Friday's third-high-seller. Tyler Graham, Agent consigned Hip 99, a half-brother to two black-type winners and an All American Futurity(G1) finalist.

Marcos Galvan was the opening session leading buyer with two purchases for $87,000. Aforementioned Dillion Lane had the one for $80,000 and Jose E. Guzman had one for $75,000.

Bobby D. Cox was the opening session leading consignor or agent (with two or more sold) with six head grossing $349,000. Tyler Graham, Agent had five head for $198,500 and 6666 Ranch, Agent for Weetona Stanley & Burnett Ranches, LLC sold three head for $72,500.

Ivory James was the opening session leading sire (by average with two or more sold), with two head for a $52,500 average. Moonin The Eagle had five average $39,200 on day 1 and Tempting Dash had six for $33,333.

Saturday's session will feature hips 126 thru 251 with a 10:30 a.m. (CDT) start in the Exposition Hall at the Freeman in San Antonio.
