Pair of $180,000 Yearlings Close Out Ruidoso Select Sale Sunday Night

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—SEPTEMBER 4, 2016—A pair of $180,000 yearlings topped the final session of the 2016 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale on Sunday night at Ruidoso Downs.

A decline in oil and cattle prices and the uncertainty of election year saw numbers drop across the board compared to last year's sale. Preliminary numbers for this year's event show 334 yearlings sold for a $12,013,400 gross. This compares to 352 head sold in 2015 for $14,725,400.

The three-day average was $35,968 compared to $41,835 in 2015 and the median dropped to $26,000 from $31,500 last year.

Hip 411 Amendola, a half-brother to Ruidoso Derby(G1) winner Rock You, tied for the high-seller in Sunday's closing session. Fulton Quien Sabe Ranch LP and Turner Farms purchased the Walk Thru Fire colt out of Babe On The Fly, by Strawfly Special, for $180,000 from the Burns Ranch, Agent consignment.

Seven horses later, 2016 All American Derby(G1) winning trainer Judd Kearl signed a $180,000 ticket for Hip 418 Fly Baby Fly, a One Famous Eagle half-sister to G1-placed Highest Fire and stakes-placed G1 finalist Corona The Cat. Julianna Hawn Holt consigned the filly out of AQHA Racing Champion mare Higher Fire.

Sunday's results also picked up a previous yearling, Hip 223 Not A Tres Of Fear, who had been marked unsold.

Johnny Cope, R.D. Hubbard, Rafter W Stables and Henry Southway paid the $200,000 reserve for the Tres Seis half-brother to AQHA Racing World Champion Heza Dasha Fire and AQHA Racing Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding Ima Fearless Hero. Burns Ranch, Agent for S-Quarter-K, LLC consigned the sorrel colt out of Grade 3 winner Dasha Freda, by Mr Jess Perry.

Reliance Ranches, LLC was the sale's leading buyer with five purchases grossing $495,000. Judd Kearl signed tickets on five head totaling $385,000 and Roman Vega had 16 yearlings for $382,700.

Julianna Hawn Holt was the sale's leading consignor and/or agent with 11 yearlings grossing $869,000. Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent had 25 head gross $837,000 and Bobby D Cox had 20 yearlings bring $757,000.

Tres Seis was the leading sale sire (by average with two or more sold) with nine yearlings averaging $65,556. Corona Cartel had 29 yearlings for $56,276 and Mr Jess Perry saw 23 yearlings average $51,891.

Champion Hez Our Secret was the leading "first crop sale sire" (by average with two or more sold) with five yearlings for $17,200.
