Richest Oaks Ever Heads Saturday’s Los Alamitos Program

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 24, 2023—All is set for the running of the richest ever all-female Quarter Horse race as 10 outstanding sophomore fillies will face off in the Grade 1, $461,500 Los Alamitos Oaks on Saturday night.

The nine-race program will also feature the meet’s first races for juveniles with three 220-yard dashes on tap.

The prize money for this year’s Los Alamitos Oaks will top the previous national record purse for an all-female race of $460,963 set in last year’s All American Oaks. The purse for the 2023 Los Alamitos Oaks is 5% higher than last year’s $438,500 final won by Edward and Theresa DeNike’s Sweet Tess.

This year’s Grade 1 field will be headed by a pair of Power Jam (TB) fillies owned by Ken O’Brien and will include fastest qualifier Streaks Of Power. The gray filly won her trial after shaking off a bump at the start and she eventually crossed the finish line 3/4 lengths ahead of Rainbow Futurity finalist Fearless Moon.

Streaks Of Power went on to cover the 400 yards in :19.881, a time that was slightly ahead of Bobbie and Larry Rice’s Cartel Kisses’ second fastest qualifying time of :19.901.

Streaks Of Power will be join in the Oaks by stablemate Candys Special Power, who won her trial by a half-length for O’Brien over Firecracker Futurity winner AJRun For Cash.

"She’s the best looking 3-year-old filly that I’ve seen in my life. I’ve always loved her," O’Brien said of Candys Special Power. "I like the way she is put together. She’s got low hocks to the ground, long hips, and a longer body like the Gentry family (of mares) has, which I think is the best family in the business. They’ve always been my favorite. My wife Nina, her favorite horse is Streaks Of Power. We’ve been very blessed and fortunate to have (them)."

Monty Arrossa trains both Streaks Of Power and Candys Special Power. Armando Cervantes will ride Streaks Of Power from post eight and Eduardo Nicasio will ride Candys Special Power from post two.

Trained by Heath Taylor, Cartel Kisses comes in with an enviable record of victories. The filly by Kiss My Hocks has won eight of her 11 career starts and seven of those have come in either a stakes races or in a major futurity trial. She’s also won three stakes events in her career including the Restricted Grade 1 Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity. Rodrigo Sigala Vallejo will be aboard the Flag Ranch-bred filly from post seven.

Gentry Farm’s Fearless Moon, who was fourth in the Grade 1 Rainbow, and J. Francisco Diaz’s Quirky Bitty Jess, who was third in the Grade 1 EdBurke Million, are two other top contenders.

Budder Off Friends, AJRun For Cash, AJBorn Runnin, BFLizzierageous and Mid Knight Flash will complete the field.
