Five Stakes Featured on Canterbury Park’s All-Quarter Horse Program

SHAKOPEE, MNAUGUST 7, 2020Five official stakes, topped by the 350-yard, $86,900 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, will be featured on Tuesday’s all-Quarter Horse program at Canterbury Park.

Spencer Cordes’ Jess One Lane, a One Sweet Jess colt trained by Vic Hanson, set the fastest Northlands Futurity qualifying time with his half-length victory in the second of three trials on July 28. Jess One Lane has won two of four starts and has earned $13,074, and his early-season record includes a third-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Relentless Seis, in the 350-yard, $67,000 Minnesota QHRA Futurity (R) on July 7.

Jess One Lane drew post 9 and will be ridden by Ismael Suarez Ricardo.

Ten sophomores, headed by Brenda Reiswig’s Midnight Moonlyte, are entered in Tuesday’s 400-yard, $48,775 Canterbury Park Derby. A homebred son of champion First Moonflash, Midnight Moonlyte is winless in three starts this year. However, he was a stakes winner at Ruidoso Downs last summer, scoring a half-length victory in the 350-yard, $100,000 Ruidoso Juvenile Stakes.

Midnight Moonlyte drew post 3 and will be ridden by Daniel Torres for trainer Clint Crawford.

Other contenders include fastest qualifier VF Politics N Chicks, a gelded son of world champion Apollitical Jess trained by Jason Olmstead for owner Richard L. Tobin. VF Politics N Chicks is coming off of a head victory in the first of two trials on July 28, and his season resume includes a second-place finish, a half of a length behind Southard Queen, in the 400-yard, $93,000 Iowa Double Gold Derby (R) at Prairie Meadows on July 11.

VF Politics N Chicks drew post 8 and will be ridden by Nik Goodwin.

Three other stakes will be contested at Canterbury Park on Tuesday. Five Minnesota-bred sprinters are entered in the 350-yard, $30,000 Bob Morehouse Stakes (R). Trainer Jason Olmstead will send out three contenders, topped by Polar Xpress, a homebred 5-year-old daughter of Freighttrain B owned by Summer Run Inc. Polar Xpress’ season record includes a neck victory in the 300-yard, $20,000 Cam Casby Stakes (R) for state-breds on June 10. The mare drew the rail post and will be ridden by Kelsi Harr.

A $10,000 purchase at last year’s Heritage Place Yearling Sale, Shawnna Payntier’s Pritty Too is the only previous-race winner among the nine 2-year-olds entered in Tuesday’s 350-yard, $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile Stakes. Pritty Too made her debut with a two-length win in a 250-yard, $15,300 maiden-special-weight dash at Remington Park on March 21. The sorrel daughter of Chickie Cherry Cola drew post 9 and will be ridden by Ismael Suarez Ricardo for trainer Vic Hanson.

Jess A Wild Time, a homebred One Sweet Jess gelding trained by Robert Johnson for owner David L. Wisdom, heads a full field of 10 juveniles entered in Tuesday’s 350-yard, $15,000 1889 Futurity. Jess A Wild Time is coming off of a second-place finish as the fastest qualifier in the 350-yard, $15,000 North Dakota QHRA Futurity (R) on July 26. Jess A Wild Time drew post 3 and will be ridden by Jake Olesiak.
