Apollitical Barbie Fastest Qualifier from Retama Adequan Derby Challenge Trials

SELMA, TX – JULY 3, 2020 - Trials on Friday night at Retama continued with three trials for the Retama Adequan Derby Challenge, led by Apollitical Barbie, the winner of the third and final trial. The final will be held on July 25.

Apollitical Barbie ($15.40) and jockey Kelsi Purcell edged clear of post-time favorite Rusty Blood Gl to win the third trial with a final time of 20.092 and a 90 speed index over 400 yards.

John Stinebaugh trains Apollitical Barbie for owner Barbara Chase. The Apollitical Blood filly was bred in Louisiana by Bobbi Jo Randle out of Hott Feett, by Walk Thru Fire.

Apollitical Barbie broke her maiden at Delta last spring and competed in the Louisiana Juvenile Stakes there later in the summer. Friday’s trial was her first start of her 3-year-old season.

The second fastest qualifier won the second trial impressively. A Painted Dynasty ($2.60) and jockey Victor Urieta, Jr. finished in 20.159 to earn an 89 speed index. The winning duo cleared the rest of the field by three lengths.

A Painted Dynasty is trained by Alonso Neri for owner David Gutierrez. He was bred in Oklahoma by the Mixer Ranch, by FDD Dynasty and out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Third Painted Sign.

It was the first win of A Painted Dynasty’s 3-year-old season and his fifth lifetime victory. He is five for 15 lifetime with $194,408 earned to date. Earlier this year, he qualified to the Heritage Place Derby and the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby. As a 2-year-old, he was third in the Sam Houston Futurity (G2) and the Firecracker Futurity (G2) at Delta Downs. In November, he competed in the Texas Classic Futurity (G1).

Third fastest qualifier Rusty Blood Gl was second in the final trial behind Apollitical Barbie in 20.162. Jose Martinez was aboard Rusty Blood Gl for trainer Angel Sanchez. Rusty Blood Gl is owned and bred by Garza Laurel Partnership, LLC in Texas. The gelded son of Apollitical Blood is out of Dusty Rusty, by Valiant Hero.

Rusty Blood Gl made his first start of 2020 in the trial. In his 2-year-old season, he finished fifth in the Sam Houston Futurity (G2) and qualified to the Retama Park John Deere Juvenile Challenge Stakes. He finished fourth in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) at Albuquerque and has earned $46,960 despite having yet to break his maiden.

The winner of the first trial was the fifth fastest qualifier, Beaus Blood, in 20.349. Beaus Blood was ridden by J.R. Ramirez for trainer Angel Sanchez.The Apollitical Blood gelding was bred in Texas by his owner, Francisco Garza, out of Jumpn Beau Chick, by Jumpn Chic.

The Adequan Derby trial was the first start of 2020 for Beaus Blood; as a 2-year-old, he qualified to the Speedhorse Futurity (G3) at Fair Meadows and competed in the Will Rogers Juvenile Challenge in the fall.
