Favorite Cartel's Dominate Adequan Sun Downs Derby Challenge Trials

KENNEWICK, WA—APRIL 21, 2018—Multiple stakes sire Favorite Cartel dominated Saturday's Adequan Sun Downs Derby Challenge trials. The young stallion sired three of the ten qualifiers, including the two trial winners with the top two qualifying times.

A Challenge participant himself, the son of former Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Favorite Trick (TB) won the Grade 1 Bank of America Challenge Championship and the Los Alamitos Challenge Championship(G2) prior to retiring for stud duty in 2012.

On Saturday Favorite Cartel's son Corona B Gone, under jockey Ruben Lozano, raced to a one-length win the first of two trials to get the fastest Adequan Sun Downs Derby Challenge trial time of :20.323 seconds, a 94 speed index.

It was the second consecutive win, first as a 3-year-old, for the Ruben Magallanes owned and Hector Magallanes trained gelding. Third in the Baxter Andruss Oregon Bred Futurity last season, Corona B Gone closed out the season by winning a non-black type Handicap at Portland Meadows.

Michael and Shannon McKay bred the sorrel gelding in Oregon from the Shazoom mare Go Girl Gone. He has compiled a (9) 3-0-2 record and banked $19,150.

In the second trial Favorite Bling rallied, under jockey Armardo Cervantes, to get a half-length win and the second fastest time of :20.398 seconds, a 93 speed index for the 400 yards.

It was the second win for the Oregon-bred Favorite Cartel filly who stepped out of the claiming ranks at Los Alamitos last season to make her first start in the Pacific Northwest in January at Portland Meadows.

Juan Jose Romo, Jr. conditions the royally bred filly for owner Juan Morales. Favorite Bling is out of a stakes-placed sister to Champion Strawkins and Grade 1 winner Bf Farm Boss. Donald and Peggy Boyle bred Favorite Bling from Spring Bling by Hawkinson.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to Sun Downs on Saturday, May 5 to compete for the winner's purse of the $20,000-added 400 yard event.

The top two finishers in the Adequan Sun Downs Derby Challenge will also earn an invite to the Grade 3 $150,000-est. Adequan Sun Downs Derby Challenge Championship on November 17 at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress, California.
