GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—NOVEMBER 7, 2015—Jesse M. Gibson’s Careless Lightning extended his win streak to four races in Saturday’s 350-yard, $151,500 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) at Lone Star Park.

Prepped by Leon Bard and ridden by Larry Payne, Careless Lightning defeated 5-2 favorite Undivided Atemption by a half of a length in :17.610. The $69,000 winner’s share of the purse pushed his bankroll to $150,219.

“He didn’t break that sharp tonight,” said Payne. “In the early going, we were probably seventh or eighth, but he responded well when I got into him. That’s kind of the way he runs. He hasn’t broken quickly in the races I’ve ridden him in.

“His dad (American Runaway) was the same way,” he added. “I rode him in his first out at Remington when he was a 2-year-old, and he broke really tardily and made the finals of the Remington Park Futurity. This colt is a lot like him. He breaks a little tardy and finishes strong in every race I’ve ridden him in.”

Bobby D. Cox bred Careless Lightning in Oklahoma. The gelding's sire champion American Runaway, won the 2010 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) and died unexpectedly after his first season at stud. The gray gelding is out of Corona Edge, by Corona Cartel.

Careless Lightning has won four of his six races, and his win streak includes a victories in the June 27, 350-yard TQHA Sires Cup Futurity (RG3) and August 8, 350-yard John Deere Retama Juvenile Challenge, both at Retama Park near San Antonio.

“This horse was going into the Dash For Cash Futurity trials, but he came up with a runny nose and we didn’t want to chance it,” Bard said.

Quency Grant's Undivided Atemption earned $30,000 for finishing second. Rolando Almanza saddled the Tempting Dash gelding out of Efforts Easy Dash, by Streakin To Early. Esgar Ramirez rode the Zule Farms, LLC South Carolina-bred.

For Sweet Jess finished a nose back in third for owner Ruben Magallanes. Hector Magallanes trains the gelded son of first-crop sire One Sweet Jess from the Chicks Beduino mare For Some Cash. K & R Allred Ranch LLC bred the gelding in Arizona. He earned $15,000.

After two disqualifications for interference, JS Abel Dasher, Bos Big Shamoon, Queen Catherine, Gone All In, Seis Me, Brabus, Pappas In The House, and Panther Hero completed the official order of finish.
