Ruidoso Downs Barn Area Opening Delayed

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MARCH 28, 2020—All American Ruidoso Downs, LLC, the partnership consisting of Stan Sigman, Johnny Trotter, and Chicho Flores, which operates the track and casino, have decided to postpone until further notice the arrival of horsemen and horses to the Ruidoso Downs barn area.

Ruidoso Downs Race Track originally planned for an April 15 opening for horses and in light of racing shutdowns in March, offered an earlier date of April 5 to accommodate horsemen. That earlier date is now in conflict with Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Department of Health's "stay at home" public health order and 14-day self-isolation for out-of-state travelers.

"Our goal has been to prepare for the recovery and the resumption of racing at Ruidoso Downs by offering definitive dates of arrival," said Jeff True. "This is a very fluid situation and the news of the past week made the ownership feel we have not yet reached a point that we can safely open the barn area under the Governor’s current mandates. The health and safety of our community and our racing industry has to be the top priority."

Ruidoso Downs will look to the State of New Mexico and the Governor to provide further guidance on when the movement of horses and horsemen will be acceptable. The current restrictions and public health order are effective through April 9.
