RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MAY 26, 2017—AQHA Racing Champion jockey will be looking to pickup his 1001th career victory today when he picks up a mount in each of the 13 races of the first of two days of trails for the $1 million Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.
Ramirez reached the 1,000 win milestone at Remington Park on May 19. There had been some confusion between AQHA and Equibase records, but after some research it was discovered that a horse Ramirez finished second on had been moved to first following a disqualification, thus giving him the milestone victory last week.
The champion jockey's 1000th win came aboard Bobby Simmons’ stakes-placed 4-year-old Patriot Pearl in an allowance/optional-claiming race. The son of Game Patriot finished third in the Texas Classic Juvenile at 2 and was a finalist in the Texas Classic Derby(G1) and Dash For Cash Derby(G3) last year.
Ramirez joins 85 other Quarter Horse jockeys to reach the 1000 win milestone.
He was the AQHA Racing's champion jockey in 2015, and has career earnings of more than $26.4 million.
Ramirez rode his first racehorse at 13, and learned the game on the match tracks. He rode his first official races in 2003, and since then has ridden Grade 1 winners Tres Friends, Bodacious Dash, High Plains Perry, BP Cartels Alibi, Ms First Prize Rose, Miss Racy Jess, Torts On Fire, Bodacious Eagle, Famous Little Reba, Dynastys First Call, First Painted Sign, Varsity Girl and CR Tuckernuck.
