Sooner State Stakes Redo Headlines Big Oklahoma-Bred Card Sunday At Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 27, 2016—The Memorial Day holiday weekend of racing is headlined by a big Oklahoma-bred stakes program on Sunday afternoon, made even larger by the rescheduled $100,000 Sooner State Stakes.

Originally run on May 7, the Sooner State was declared a “no-contest” event when the starting gate malfunctioned. The stall doors for each horse in the race didn’t open simultaneously, leading to the declaration by Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission Stewards.

The second attempt for the Sooner State Stakes drew a field of eight and will have Sam Crow and AJs High square off again, as they did in the $70,000 Mr Jet Moore Stakes. AJs High won that race on April 7 with Sam Crow a half-length back in second. AJs High also won the Eastex Stakes on March 13 and bids to win his third consecutive stakes event of the season.

Sam Crow actually crossed the finish first in the “no-contest” Sooner State Stakes but that result was erased. The 4-year-old gelding is just a little more than $100,000 away from $1 million in career earnings but is seeking his first official win of the Remington Park season.

The field for the Sooner State Stakes, with trainer and jockey:

  1. Rockin Disco: Tammy Johnson, Jose Vega
  2. Champion Huddle: John Hammes, Debbie Freeman
  3. Sam Crow: Trey Wood, Raul Ramirez
  4. Rocking TA Ivolene: Theodore Alexander, Roberto Meraz
  5. Bringin The Gray: Fernando Carrete, Agustin Silva
  6. AJs High: Charley Hunt, Stormy Smith
  7. Goodreasonforcandy: Clint Crawford, Jose Montoya
  8. Big Time Toast: Manuel Mata, Jorge Torres

The Sooner State Stakes begins a run of five consecutive races for Oklahoma-breds Sunday to finish the big program, with purse money for the five stakes at $360,000.
