HOUSTON, TX–JUNE 08, 2026–The curtain will fall on the 2026 Sam Houston Quarter Horse Meet Saturday evening with a spectacular twelve-race program to close the season. First post is set for 6:05 p.m., and by night's end more than $1.3 million in purses will be distributed as the Grade 2 Sam Houston Futurity, Grade 3 Sam Houston Derby, and Sam Houston Oaks headline an action-packed card.
The stakes-filled evening will also feature the Jesse Yoakum Memorial Stakes, Willie Hickman Memorial Stakes, Governors Cup Marathon Stakes, Sam Houston 550 Stakes, Miss Sam Houston Stakes, and Sam Houston 250 Stakes, creating a championship atmosphere as Texas horsemen and women compete for some of the richest prizes of the season.
The fourth race will kick off the stakes action with the Grade 2, $52,000 Jesse Yoakum Memorial Stakes. A field of six accomplished Texas-Breds will travel 870 yards around the turn in what shapes up as a highly competitive distance event.
Fire Bolt B enters seeking his fifth consecutive victory after scoring in the Grade 3 $43,000 Sam Houston Distance Challenge Stakes, where he defeated Gjr Rooster by 1¼ lengths. The rivals will meet again Saturday evening, this time breaking side by side. Fire Bolt B has won six of his career starts and earned $85,173 for owners Tony E. Sedillo and RC Racing, LLC, who purchased him for $11,000 at the TQHA Yearling Sale.
The gelding is sired by Bolt of Fire and out of the Fdd Dynasty mare She a Elektra B. Bred in Texas by Bielau Oaks, he is trained by Richard D. Sedillo and will leave from post three with leading jockey Nestor Duran aboard.
The fifth race features a field of seven Texas-breds, three-year-olds and older, in the Grade 2, $50,000 Willie Hickman Memorial Stakes at 400 yards.
Ka Prietito enters from the outside post after an impressive victory in the Grade 2 $75,000 Sam Houston Classic Stakes on May 9, where he drew away to win by 1¼ lengths. The four-year-old gelding has four wins from thirteen starts and has earned $106,666 for owners Fernando Soto and Rolando Soto.
The son of Kas Tempting, out of the Azoom mare Marys Corazon, was bred in Texas by Rancho J S. Trained by Sergio Fuentes, he will break from post seven with Luis A. Maldonado in the saddle.
Distance specialists return in the sixth race for the Grade 3, $50,000 Governors Cup Marathon Stakes. The field of eight will travel 870 yards with a scheduled post time of approximately 8:29 p.m.
Pevs Kiote Moon enters the rail after a dominant seven-length victory at Remington Park, where he opened daylight on the field from start to finish. The gelding has won four races and earned $59,493 while carrying the colors of owner-trainer Riley S. Aguilar.
The Oklahoma-bred son of Moonin the Eagle, out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Ima Pyc China Doll, was bred by Gordon J. Pevehouse. Jacobo A. Aguilar has the mount from post one.
The seventh race features nine Texas-breds in the Grade 3, $52,000 Sam Houston 550 Stakes. The unique distance adds intrigue, as several entrants will be running the 550-yard trip for the first time.
Top Cowboy returns for his first start of 2026 after posting two 220-yard workouts in preparation for the challenge. The five-year-old gelding has earned three wins, three runner-up finishes, and four thirds in eighteen career starts, earning $76,558 for owners Rodrigo Gonzalez and Leviram Racing, LLC.
The son of Flying Cowboy 123, out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paradice City, was bred in Texas by Tyler and Naia Graham. Trainer Marc E. Jungers will send him from post five with Luis L. Vivanco aboard.
The eighth race features the $50,000 Miss Sam Houston Stakes, with ten Texas-bred fillies and mares racing 330 yards.
As Jess Louisiana Girl makes her first appearance of 2026, she closes her four-year-old season with a thrilling victory in the $60,000 Yellow Rose Texas Bred Stakes. The mare also hit the board in both the B.F. Phillips, Jr. Stakes and the Dr. Glenn Blodgett Stakes, accumulating earnings of $130,461 for owner Eleazar Martinez, Sr.
The daughter of Chilitos and the Louisiana Cartel mare Sissy Cartel was bred in Texas by Anahi Martinez. Victor G. Fierro trains the talented mare, who will break from post four with regular rider Claudio P. Aguilar.
The stakes parade continues in race nine with the $52,000 Sam Houston 250 Stakes. The field of ten Texas-Breds will square off over the lightning-fast 250-yard distance at approximately 9:53 p.m.
Heza Fast Dynasty ships in from Louisiana Downs after winning both of his starts this season at 220 yards. The six-year-old has shown exceptional gate speed and quick acceleration, traits that could prove valuable in the evening's shortest races.
The son of Jr Dynasty Mountain, out of the Heza Fast Man mare Rockin Thunderella, was bred in Texas by owner Karla Retana Nejera. He is trained by Rosa E. Ramirez and will be ridden by Randy Edison, Jr.
As the final night of the Sam Houston meet unfolds, the undercard stakes deliver plenty of excitement before the championship trio of the Sam Houston Oaks, Sam Houston Derby, and Sam Houston Futurity takes center stage. From seasoned distance runners to explosive sprinters, the evening showcases the best of Texas Quarter Horse racing and promises a memorable conclusion to another successful season at Sam Houston Race Park.
