LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JULY 23, 2021—State-bred Quarter Horses will be showcased on July 31 & August 1 during California Breeders Champions Night Weekend. The two-night extravaganza will be headed by the running of the Governor’s Cup Futurity on Saturday night and the Governor’s Cup Derby on Sunday night. This will be the 22nd edition of this event. Here are all the nominations.

Nominations for the rest of the stakes events to be held over the weekend closed on Thursday morning and once the sheets with the horses were released, several dream matchups came to the forefront.

The biggest of them will come in the Restricted Grade 1, $100,000 Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap, as Ed Allred has nominated all three of his outstanding older runners in Chocolatito, Circle City, and Nomadic.

The winner of the Grade 1 Vessels Maturity and Grade 1 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship, Chocolatito will return to action for the first time since the trials to the Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship. The son of Favorite Cartel, who was fourth in last year’s Champion of Champions, had a solid 350-yard gate work on July 10 in preparation for the Spencer Childers.

Circle City and Nomadic are full brother and multiple graded stakes winners. Circle City won the Golden State Derby last year and most recently earned a presumptive berth to the Champion of Champions following his Vessels Maturity win. Nomadic won on Champions Night in last year’s Governor’s Cup Derby before finishing his sophomore season with a victory in the Grade 2 Southern California Derby. Nomadic has posted three works this year and the Spencer Childers represents his 2021 debut. Allred has also nominated Just Be Real here. All four of his horses are trained by Scott Willoughby.

Other top names nominated include the Grade 1 place runners Cattail Cove, who competed in the Vessels Maturity earlier this year, Juniors Quarter Horses’ Made Over, who was second in the Vessels Maturity, and the outstanding Mental Error, who has competed in six stakes races in his career. The stakes winner Mister Tornado and A Ransom Handicap runner-up Pesky are among the 11 nominees.

Gentry Farms’ Kiss Thru Fire, the winner of the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap, headlines the list of nine nominees to the Restricted Grade 3, $40,000 Matron Stakes. The winner of the Denim N Diamonds Handicap earlier this year, Kiss Thru Fire returns here after running in both the Junos Request and Easy Date at Remington Park. Max My Bullet and Rite On Time, both futurity finalists last year, will look to upset.

Eighteen runners have been nominated to the Sprint Stakes with the likes of multiple stakes winner Black Fryday, winner of the Independence Day Handicap in his last outing, the veteran sprinter Chicks Fayvorite, and Cypress Stakes winner Stolen Lives among the likely starters.

Sixteen have been nominated to the $25,000 California Breeders Freshman Stakes led by Ed Burke Million Futurity winner Golden Boi and Kindergarten Futurity finalist La Blue Amore. Cactus Jack and Cumbia, a pair of impressive freshman winners are also on the list. Owned by a partnership, Majority Interest is one of the top fillies nominated to the Freshman Stakes for fillies along with EG High Desert Farms Argelia Klove as well as the aforementioned runners La Blue Amore and Cumbia.

Allred’s Chance It Now, who won the inaugural Fred Scane Memorial Stakes, heads the list of 11 runners nominated to the $25,000 Debutante Stakes. Multiple allowance winner Powerline Road is among the interested fillies found on the list of nominees. The $25,000 Jens List Memorial Stakes will be led by Fly The Coup and Hi High Hopes, a pair of Kindergarten Futurity finalists last year. There are seven nominees in this race/

Track record holder Ballast Point is one of six nominated to the Sign Of Lanty Handicap at 870 yards. He could face the Thoroughbred winning machine Oh Jerry in this race. Ten have been nominated to the new Robert Strauss Handicap. The race could feature the fourth meeting between Black Fryday and Victorio Jess Jqm. All three previous matchups have been heart-pounding duels. Horses have also been nominated to four claiming stakes.
