Canada Cup Derby and Canada Cup Futurity Finals on Sunday at Century Downs

ROCKY VIEW, AB—OCTOBER 18, 2019—Two stakes will kick off the Sunday card at Century Downs as 2-year-olds contest the $72,227 Canada Cup Futurity (RG3) and 3-year-olds compete in the $29,765 Canada Cup Derby.

The Canada Cup Futurity features ten 2-year-olds who qualified from trials on October 5. Fastest qualifier Light Footed won her 400-yard trial in 19.952. The Stel Corona filly has never finished worse than second in four career starts, including two runner-up finishes in stakes races.

Light Footed is owned and trained by William Leech; Ricardo Moreno has the call. She was bred in California by Ed Allred, out of Chickafirst, by First Down Dash.

Also of note in the race is a pair of previous stakes winners: Honeys Painted Pop and Zoomn On Bye.

Honeys Painted Pop won his trial as the second fastest qualifier; the Buckey Stockwell trainee recently won the John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge, defeating Light Footed by a length and a half.

Honeys Painted Pop’s only loss to date came in a trial for the Evergreen Park Challenge, a second-place finish to Light Footed. He is owned by Stockwell and was bred in Oklahoma by Gary Kurz, by Pyc Paint Your Wagon and out of Gols Honey Money Pop, by Gol.

Third fastest qualifier Zoomn On Bye finished a nose behind Honeys Painted Pop in their trial. In his previous start, he won the Alberta Bred Futurity. Zoomn On Bye is by Mezoomin and out of the Eyesa Special mare Eyesa Chickin It Out. He was bred in Alberta by Shady Lane Stables, trained by Allen Goodsell, and owned by Thomas Pick.

The Canada Cup Futurity is Race 2 on the Sunday card at Century Downs. Scheduled post time is 4:15 pm MT.

In the Canada Cup Derby, a full field of 3-year-olds qualified from two trials on October 6. The fastest qualifier, Papas Coleen, defeated Jb Runaway by a length in the second trial, posting a time of 19.885 for the 400-yard trial.

Papas Coleen and jockey Ceasar Cervantes return on Sunday as the morning-line favorite for trainer Darcy Hawkes and owner Donalda Cochrane. The 3-year-old First Timber filly was third in the Canada Cup Futurity last fall; this fall, she won the Alberta Bred Derby at Century and also finished second in the Evergreen Park Derby Challenge at Grande Prairie.

Papas Coleen was bred in Alberta by her owner, out of Cash in This Lane, by Lanes Leinster.

Singles Cruise was sixth in her trial after an awkward beginning, but the daughter of Favorite Cartel brings significant backclass to the field. The multiple stakes winner has eight wins in 16 starts and $91,884 in career earnings. She won the Canada Cup Futurity last fall as well as the John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge, which earned her a berth in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos.

Singles Cruise will be ridden by Neville Stephenson for trainer Laurie Ferguson and owners Barry and Janice Sather. She was bred in California by Steve Burns, DVM, out of the Mr Eye Opener mare Going Single.
