Five Bar Cartel Well-Represented in Crater Lake Handicap at Grants Pass

GRANTS PASS, OR—OCTOBER 17, 2019 —On a card with several Thoroughbred stakes, the feature race for Quarter Horses on Sunday at Grants Pass will be the $11,000-added Crater Lake Handicap. The 400-yard stake is open to 3-year-olds, high weights preferred.

Five Bar Cartel, currently the second-leading second-year sire by earnings, has sired two of the top contenders in the race, Ladys A Cartel and Harem Bar Cartel. Both entries are trained by Danny Montes.

Ladys A Cartel is the 5-2 morning-line favorite and will break out of post seven with Jake Samuels aboard. The 3-year-old filly has made most of her starts at Los Alamitos and leads the field by earnings with $43,607 earned in her ten career efforts. This will be her sixth stakes start; she won the Pot of Gold Futurity at Sun Downs as a 2-year-old and has since competed five stakes ta Los Alamitos, most recently in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby.

Ladys A Cartel is owned by Jorge Carmona and was bred in California by A Regal Choice, Inc., out of the Thoroughbred mare Significant Lady, by Relagate.

The same connections team up for Harem Bar Cartel, ridden for the first time by Jose Figueroa. The gelding is out of Harem Carver, by Wave Carver.

The Crater Lake will be a homecoming of sorts for Harem Bar Cartel, who debuted at Grants Pass as a 2-year-old in 2018 and is undefeated in two starts at the track, including the Firecracker Futurity.

Local horse Gc Harrys Game will be a threat; the Carters Cartel gelding has only finished out of the money twice in 12 starts and has earnings of $35,614. The stakes winner is trained by Scott Raley for owner Connie Chumbley; Robert Burney has the call. He was bred in Oregon by the Gary Chumbley Estate, out of the Game Patriot mare Ez Gamer.

The Crater Lake Handicap is Race 8 on the Sunday card at Grants Pass. First post is 12:00 pm PT; the Quarter Horse stake is scheduled at 2:55 pm PT.
