GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—SEPTEMBER 19, 2018—Fifty sophomores, headed by the Grade 1-placed Cartel Cupid, have been entered in Friday’s 440-yard Dash For Cash Derby (G3) trials at Lone Star Park.
Cartel Cupid is a homebred son of Corona Cartel trained by Blane Wood for owners Randy and Sandy Coleman. The bay gelding ships in from Ruidoso Downs, where he ran second, three-quarters of a length behind winner Jess Move You, in the 400-yard, $759,000 Ruidoso Derby (G1) on June 9.
A finalist in last year’s Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park, Cartel Cupid drew post 6 and will be ridden by Ricky Ramirez in the second of five trials.
Other prominent 3-year-olds entered in the Dash For Cash Derby trials include Elite Oilfield Services’ Eos A Political Win. A bay son of world champion Apollitical Jess trained by Rolando Almanza, the colt is coming off of a deadheat victory with Three Bar Cartel in the 400-yard, $139,000 Retama Park Derby on July 28, and his resume includes a third-place finish, a neck behind winner Pyc Fun N Fancy, in the 400-yard, $364,000 Heritage Place Derby (G2) at Remington Park on June 2.
