Heza Dasha Fire to Make 2017 Debut on California Breeders Champions Night

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JULY 27, 2017— S-Quarter K Racing’s superstar Heza Dasha Fire, the 2015 AQHA World Champion and Champion of Champions winner, will make his season debut when he headlines the running of the Restricted Grade 1, $100,000 Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

The Spencer Childers is among the many marquee races that will be contested as part of the 18th edition of California Breeders Champions Night, which features 12 stakes races for California-breds. In addition to the Spencer Childers, the evening will also feature the running of the $395,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity and $203,000 Governor’s Cup Derby.

To be ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores, Heza Dasha Fire will enter his 2017 debut after a superb 350-yard gate work with company on July 1. The son of Walk Thru Fire covered the distance from the outside post in the work in a sizzling :17.40 under a hand ride. Heza Dasha Fire will enter the Spencer Childers with a record of 13 wins and 16 top two finishes from 17 career starts. The homebred has lifetime earnings of $1,918,737.

“Heza Dasha Fire returning to the race brings up the entire barn,” Flores said. “My whole team loves it when he’s in training and getting ready for a race. It’s good to have him back regardless of how he runs. He’s healthy and we hope he’ll have a good start. Our main concern is to keep him healthy all season long. He ran second in the Champion of Champions in his final start of 2016. After the race we found that he had an eye infection and a kidney issue. Dr. Rick Overly and his team did a great job getting him healthy and back on track. He should have a good campaign if things go like we think they will go.”

Flores believes that Heza Dasha Fire will run like he worked on the first of the month.

“We got some company for the work to build his heart. He started fast in the work and Cruz hand-rode most of the way. I was very impressed. I get scared when I see him work so fast, but that’s just him. He’s a fast horse and that’s what he does. We didn’t push him and he’ll come into the race fresh. He should come back and run a nice race.

“If he comes back sound and pulls up good, we’ll point him to the Grade 1 Go Man Go (on September 3) and from there maybe the (Robert L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship on October 15). To have him back in the Champion of Champions on December 16, that’s our ultimate goal.”

Among Heza Dasha Fire’s rivals in the Spencer Childers will be Ed Allred’s He Looks Hot, the two-time Grade 1 winning millionaire. Also sired by Walk Thru Fire, the 5-year-old He Looks Hot won the Grade 1 Vessels Maturity last year and the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity as a 2-year-old. He most recently finished third to BH Lisas Boy in the Kaweah Bar Handicap.
